Radio A Gogo - Neo Retro A Gogo - Brigitte
Radio Modern & Petrol present: Radio A Gogo - Brigitte edition
two rooms full of rock'n'soul, beat, love and teasing Burlesque. From Aretha Franklin to Arctic Monkeys

A Gogo, party like it's 1964!

Main Room - Radio A Gogo

Club - Neo Retro A Gogo
Groovy!

Freaky Age, Mint, Cole Park, Radio Slave, James Teej
Met Where Do We Go Now had Freaky Age een paar jaar geleden meteen een hit te pakken. Opgenomen in Londen en gemasterd door de knoppenman van The Smiths, New Order en Arcade Fire. Enkele weken voordien speelt Freaky Age op South By Southwest Festival, 's werelds grootste showcasefestival. Excitement in the morning light!

1 ticket!

Rekids

Releaset op Rekids, Rebirth Records, TicTacToe & Connect Four Records, No.19 Music en My Favorite Robot Records.

Lefties Soul Connection

Lefties Soul Connection
The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the Lefties Soul Connection sound is the word 'RAW'. Sound and music wise the band is influenced by funk acts like the Meters and the JB's, but also by hip-hop acts like for example Jurassic 5, the Roots and Beastie Boys. In general they have their backbone in the raw (obscure) funk & soul from the 60s till early 70s but a lot of tracks are based on hip-hop feel/sound/structure (open drum breaks, ready to sample riffs).

They also have some '(mod) rock' influence in their sound, this can be especially seen and heard at live concerts and you can hear it in the aggressiveness of their sound. Their goal is to rock the crowd hard with heavy beats, low bumping bass, screaming Hammond organ and tight guitar riffs, sometimes accompanied by vocals or chants.

The band is not strictly a retro band, they're not trying to copy an old soul/funk band; an important difference with some other (raw) funk & soul bands of today. It's not their intention to play funk exactly the same like the JB's or the Meters used to do. These bands will always be the best because it's the sound they've created. Lefties Soul Connection just picked up some of their grooves and philosophy and mixed it with hip-hop breakbeat / song structure and (mod) rock aggressive sound/performance style. What you get is an explosive performance with tight grooves and the heaviest live beats you ever heard (we like to call it the "shock 'n' awe" style or garage funk).

Slowly they've been building a fan base within the international (raw) funk & soul (b-boy) community with their sound and especially at performances but, because they're not strictly retro, they also broke out of this scene and got noticed by people that are more into hip-hop and even rock and dance. A good example of a track getting noticed outside the funk community is their interpretation of Organ Donor, a dj Shadow track.

A large part of their recordings is instrumental. Basically they've set up the band similar to the Meters and Booker T & the MG's. Like these bands, their music is centred around groove/sound and not so much lyrics/a singer. At live shows though, more vocal tracks are added. These tracks are sung by guitar player Onno Smit; before starting the band together with Alviz, also a soul singer.

James Pants

James Pants
The son of two Presbyterian ministers from an American backwater called Spokane, James Pants went from being the teenage DJ for a black nationalist rap group to a multi-instrumentalist who can count on fans as diverse as Flying Lotus, Zane Lowe, Erol Alkan and XL's new teen hip-hop internet sensation Tyler The Creator, who calls James "one of the most creative fucking people to walk this earth".

James met Stones Throw Records head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf after his high school prom and dropped a debut album in 2008, Welcome, which told the tale of a lone music obsessive who synthesized a staggeringly broad record collection into a coherent LP in a style he dubbed "fresh beat", taking in '80s boogie, synth experiments, garage rock and much more.

Since then James has toured the globe, released Seven Seals (a tribute to his beloved '70s cult and New Age records), a self-titled third album, and uprooted from Colorado to Cologne, where he works as a studio engineer.

THE YEAR IS 2001 AND THE PLACE IS TEXAS. Stones Throw head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf is DJing while a sharply dressed young man approaches the DJ Booth with his Prom date in tow to formally introduce himself. Thus begins the story of James Pants. What began as a dream Prom night to see his hero DJ went to an internship at the label to eventually landing the ultimate fantasy by being signed to the roster and championed as the 'next big thing' by none other than Peanut Butter Wolf himself - on top of critics like Busy P, Urb, XLR8R, & Dazed & Confused Magazines. Mr. Pants is a purveyor par excellence of that unmistakable "fresh beat": 80's Soul, Electro Boogie, Early Rap, New Wave, & Post-Punk Disco, all of which can be found on Welcome where James plays drums, keys, guitar and sings. From a radio perspective, what format does this fall under - this new style that Pants has invented? Do you play it on the groove alongside the likes of Skyy, Cameo, or even Pharrell (listen to 'KA$H')? Or do you play it in the underground alongside the up-to-the-minute electro pulse of Egyptian Lover, Cybotron and even Too $hort? The answer, of course, is both! There's enough Pants to fit any style.

Radio Infinity

Radio Infinity
There's still hope in dark days of consumer-focussed music... Ben Weyers was one of the key-members of MILLIONAIRE, and had quite an impact on the sound of their wonderful debut-album "Outside The Simian Flock". After extensive touring with MILLIONAIRE supporting QUEENS OF THE STONEAGE, Ben decided to go his own way and teamed up with EVIL SUPERSTARS bass player Bart Vandebroeck. Backed-up by VANDAL X's drum beast Gunter Liket, RADIO INFINITY it was... An explosive cocktail of raw guitars, a little psychedelic, and a wild rhythm-section. They released their debut-album in 2006, which had amazing reviews in nearly every review. Now RADIO INFINITY are back with a second longplayer named "DERAIL TO INNOVATE"! No high-tech studio's, no fancy producers or stand-in musicians. RADIO INFINITY did it (again) all by themselves, from the composition over the recording, production and mixing. Beatbroken tempo-swings, catchy vocals with a tragic threatening edge, warm guitarmayhem, psychedelia, and thrilling basslines. The bands' line-up still remains intact. The album will be released in April 2008 on CD and limited edition VINYL (including bonus-tracks). RADIO INFINITY are: BEN WEYERS (Guitars/vocals) - BART VAN DEBROEK (Bass) - GUNTER LIKET (Drums). In this life or another part of MILLIONAIRE, VANDAL X, EVIL SUPERSTARS,...

The Hong Kong Dong

The Hong Kong Dong
The Cold Eighties. Destiny drove a Hong Kong concubine into the arms of a wellhung seaman. Together they built a lovenest in the sky above the Ghent sea of bricks. Their first kitten turned out to be a moustached female, that would live by the name of Sarah Yu. It took two more years before a little male, by the name of Boris, was born. At young age, both of them bundeled their musical strenghts and that's how The Hong Kong Dong was born. A band, brainchild to two unpure types with an enormous urge to form a awesome gang! In the summer of 2005 The Hong kong Dong took the stage for the very first time. What started as a duo, became a trio. Dave Willockx became the third member and would turn out to be the banging heart of the gang. Ouch! Together they started terrorising the local clubs with their spiky tunes. In the Year of the Pig (2007 for the occidentals among us) they conquered various tournaments (they won 'Lawijtstrijd, took second place in the 'Oost-Vlaams Rockconcour' and reached the finale of the 2008 'Humo's Rock Rally'). With the Year of the Rat in sight, a fourth member joined the gang. A real Rat: Geoffrey Burton. Armed with many years of experience in other gangs (Bashung, Arno, PJDS, Stéphane Eicher, Raphael, Polar, Absynth Minded,...) he provided The Hong Kong Dong with new weapons to conquer new stages (they played as support act for Digitalism at the Ancienne Belgique and were invited to open the dance at the Radio Soulwax festival at Flanders Expo).

The Germans

The Germans
(The Germans is also the name of a band formed in 2003 consisting of Rat Scabies from The Damned, Peter Coyne and Kris Dollimore, both originally from The Godfathers.) The Germans is a Belgian band consisting of brothers Lennert and Timothy Jacobs (drums & bass), singer Jakob Ampe and lead guitarist Vincent Cauwels. Influenced by other Beligan bands such as Evil Superstars and Millionaire, but also by krautrock and American bands such as Pixies and Pavement, they bring melodic rock songs with an experimental edge. The debut album "Elf Shot Lame Witch" has been released in March 2008. It has been mixed by Boris Wilsdorf, sound engineer of the legendary German band Einstürzende Neubauten.

Brazzaville

Brazzaville
Brazzaville (Belgian band) is a 7-headed band that produces an exciting, adventurous and especially a funky sound. The music is inspired by 70's jazz & funk, afrobeat and rare grooves. They recorded their debut album "Days of thunder, days of grace" in march 2008 featuring four special guests; Zap Mama, Mo & Grazz & Zita Swoon's Amel Serra. They are working on their second album that will be mixed by Ben Lamdin from Nostalgia77 (Tru Thoughts). Brazzaville already played the warm-up concerts for artists like Al Jarreau, The Neville Brothers & Marcus Miller. Last summer they played at the biggest Belgian jazz festival; Gent Jazz Festival and toured with Jazzlab Series. In 2007 they won the 'Young Jazz Talent Ghent' contest. 'Days of thunder, days of grace' best Belgian Jazz Album of 2008 according to the Belgian newspaper 'Le Soir'. The band consists of keys: Jan Willems, guitar: Geert Hellings, baritone sax: Vincent Brijs, tenorsax with effects: Andrew Claes, electric bass: Nicolas Rombouts, drums: Maarten Moesen and percussion: Amel Serra. Contact: info@brazzavillemusic.com (C) Evil Penguin (record company) 3) Brazzaville (Swedish band) Brazzaville was formed in Sala, Sweden as Tongue Gongue. Their debute demo from 1995 was given a 4.5 (of 4) rating in SA and was named "demo of the year" by Patrik Björk of Backstage Magazine. In 1996 and 1998 they played at the Hultsfred Festival. They were signed to Deaf & dumb Records and in 1996 they released their five track CD Introducing Brazzaville. It was followed in 1998 by the full length album The Girl Is Allright...

Firewater

Firewater
Firewater is a rock group founded by Tod A. in 1995. He describes them as a "wedding band gone wrong". After Tod left his previous group, Cop Shoot Cop, he quickly regrouped and formed Firewater to explore the styles of music Cop Shoot Cop had only hinted at, including klezmer, cabaret, ska, jazz, and gypsy forms. More than one source described the original Firewater lineup as an "indie rock supergroup", based on members such as Duane Denison of The Jesus Lizard, Yuval Gabay of Soul Coughing, Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields, and Hahn Rowe. This original lineup proved unable to tour, and Tod recruited new musicians for the band's first tour. While the lineup has changed over the years, with many different musicians appearing on different albums and tours, Tod remains the singer, songwriter, and bassist of Firewater. Firewater has released six albums, and has seen some success, especially in Europe and on United States college radio stations. Their previous album, Songs We Should Have Written, is a collection of cover songs. It includes songs written by Robyn Hitchcock, The Rolling Stones ("Paint It Black" reinterpreted as a crawlingly slow raga which "shove(s) a few downers down the song's throat to counter the original version's adrenaline-fueled fire" ), and a "dark and sweet" take of Sonny and Cher's "The Beat Goes On", described as "10 times more ominous and 20 times more pleasurable" than the original. The album also includes a modern rendition of the Johnny Cash anthem "Folsom Prison Blues".

Nailpin

Nailpin
Nailpin is a Belgian band.

After scoring big in their own country, with such hits as "Endless Conversations", "Movin' On" and "Together", from their debut album '12 TO GO', the boys decided to give the rest of the world a shot.

Their performance at the 2004 TMF awards (where lead singer Niko amused the crowd by stripping on stage and prancing around in a thong) caused Avril Lavigne to ask them to open for her on her Japan tour.

The band's influences include the bands Mest, Goldfinger, New Found Glory, Homegrown, MXPX and Green Day.

At the end of September '05, the band took part in MTV's Road Rally, in which they had to cross the USA from West coast to East Coast, earning their way and scoring shows. After starting in Los Angeles they ended up just beating Dutch competitor Di-rect in New York. When the serie was aired from November to January, it was a great hit.

The second Nailpin album "White Lies & Butterflies" was released in april 2006, while the band toured Japan for the second time.

Their newest album 'III' was released in april 2008, and got great reviews. The singles 'The Ending' and 'It's Allright' did good in the charts.

Arid

Arid
Arid is a Belgian rock band, formed in the mid-90s, made up of four members: Jasper Steverlinck (vocals and guitar), David Du Pré (guitar), Filip Ros (bass) and Steven Van Havere (drums). The group first came to the attention of record label Double T when they were finalist at Humo's Rock Rally, a prestigious Belgian rock contest, in 1996. Their first album was 1998's Little Things Of Venom (retitled as At The Close Of Every Day for release in the United States). In 1999, after this album's success, they toured with Suede as well as opening for fellow popular Belgian band K's Choice. The following year they opened for Counting Crows on that band's European tour. 2001 brought extra fame for lead singer Steverlinck, who starred in the IMAX 3-D film Haunted Castle alongside Harry Shearer. The film also featured music by the band during the opening and closing credits. In 2002 the band released a second studio album, All Is Quiet Now, which was soon followed by a live album (Live in 2003). February 2007 basist Filip Ros was replaced by Miko Banovic. Fiction Plane

Fiction Plane
Fiction Plane is a rock band from England. Originally formed in London under the name Santa's Boyfriend in 2001, Fiction Plane is currently comprised of lead vocalist, guitar and bass player Joe Sumner; guitarist Seton Daunt; and American drummer Pete Wilhoit. Recording history Fiction Plane's first major label release, Everything Will Never Be OK, with MCA Records, was released in the US in March 2003 with the single "Hate". Shortly after the album's release, Bloomington, IN drummer Pete Wilhoit joined the band. In spite of positive critical acclaim for the group, including being named a 'Breaker' Artist by AOL Music in March of 2003, MCA folded and the band moved over to Geffen records. In 2005 the band released a 4-song EP entitled Bitter Forces and Lame Race Horses on the Geffen imprint label Everybody's Records. In 2006, Fiction Plane made a brief move to Interscope Records and parted ways with founding member and bass/keyboard player Dan Brown[. Joe Sumner took over on bass and the band started working on a new album, Left Side of the Brain, which was released on Bieler Bros. Records on May 22, 2007. Behind the success of the singles "Two Sisters" (a popular single in France, Belgium and Holland) and "Death Machine" the album rose all the way to #46 on the Billboard Heatseeker Album Chart. On January 23, 2008, Left Side of the Brain was released in Japan through Sideout Records with two bonus tracks: "Drink (acoustic)" and "Put On Your Shoes." In April 2008, a limited tour edition of Left Side of the Brain was re-released in France through XIII Bis Records, containing five bonus tracks "VIP fast", "Coolest Kid", "At Ease", "Sleepwalker", "Drink (acoustic)"), a video clip ("Two Sisters"), and a hidden track, "The Circus Trouser Enthusiast". Four of the bonus cuts were unused demos recorded in 2006. "Sleepwalker" is an early version of what would become "Anyone," the official album's first track. On March 23, 2009, the band released its first-ever live DVD and CD package, simply entitled Paradiso, through XIII Bis Records. It was recorded on December 7, 2008 at the band's sold-out performance in Amsterdam and then mixed by Ash Howes and mastered by Andy Walters at the famed Abbey Road Studios in London. Special features on the DVD include the unedited version of the "It's A Lie" video, and a photo gallery of images taken along the band's touring journey. In February 2010, Fiction Plane completed the recording of their latest studio album, Sparks, which has an initial European release slated for May 3rd, 2010 on Roadrunner Records. The UK and US album releases are set to follow in the Fall. Produced by Paul Corkett, whose collaborations also include artists the likes of Nick Cave, Bjork and Placebo, Sparks is said to include both large anthems and eclectic tracks. Tours and live performances Fiction Plane has performed before hundreds of thousands in arenas and festivals all across Europe, Asia and North America, and have headlined their own largely sold out European tour. In 2005, Fiction Plane was the support act for Sting's Broken Music Tour, which took the band all over Europe playing 29 shows in 25 countries. Fiction Plane was then hired to support The Police on the North American, European, Australian/New Zealand, and Asian legs of their 2007 Reunion Tour, playing 87 shows. In support of the album Left Side of the Brain and the singles "Two Sisters" and "Death Machine" Fiction Plane performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2007. In the Spring of 2008, Fiction Plane toured America with The Bravery and Your Vegas. The band also toured the UK in March supporting The Feeling and supported 311 and Snoop Dogg on the 2008 Summer Unity Tour in the US. In December, 2008, Fiction Plane performed a largely sold-out run through Europe, culminating in selling out the legendary Paradiso in Amsterdam. On February 27, 2009, Fiction Plane previewed five brand new songs at a concert at Arlene's Grocery in New York City. The song titles were "Telephone Unknown," "Humanoid," "Denied," "Zero," and "Contagious." "Humanoid" and "Zero" are both currently featured in the track listing for their upcoming studio album Sparks. Fiction Plane has also been featured on several high-profile European music festivals, including Paaspop and Pinkpop in The Netherlands, The Vieilles Charrues in France, Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park in Germany. The Donnas

The Donnas
The Donnas are an American all-female rock band from Palo Alto, California. After gathering a cult following since their May 1993 debut, the band achieved major commercial success in the late-90s and afterward. All band members were born in 1979. As best friends, they formed in the 8th grade to play for their school's "Day on the Green." The only girl band in Palo Alto, they were relatively unknown until they were out of high school. They are all self-taught musicians and practiced in Castellano's garage nearly every day during high school. They are sometimes described as a punk band but the band themselves deny any kind of affiliation with the punk rock movement. Experimenting with different musical styles, they underwent a variety of band names (Screen, Raggedy Anne, and The Electrocutes) before settling on The Donnas. They worked with producer Darin Raffaelli for their first two albums, the first of which, simply called The Donnas, was entirely written by Raffaelli and released on his own Superteem! record label. (It was later re-released on Lookout! Records.) They took a week off of their senior year of high school to tour Japan and experimented with riot grrrl as The Electrocutes. They signed with Lookout! Records. As the band grew, they were urged to sign with a major label company. In 2001, they signed with Atlantic Records. In 2002, the Donnas released Spend the Night. The album was their mainstream breakthrough, spawning the hit single "Take It Off" and appearances on "Total Request Live," "Saturday Night Live," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno", and "The Late Show with David Letterman". In the summer of 2003 they played the main stage at Lollapalooza. In 2004 they released their sixth album Gold Medal. Some of their influences include KISS, L7, Bikini Kill, Shonen Knife, The Muffs, Guns N' Roses, R.E.M., The Ramones, and Bratmobile. Until the release of 2004's Gold Medal the band used pseudonyms. Each member was known as "Donna" followed by the first initial of their surname (e.g. Brett was known as Donna A). They decided to drop the stage names prior to the release of Gold Medal to present an image appropriate for the more mature sound they had adopted on the new album.

Magnapop

Magnapop
Magnapop are a rock band based in Atlanta, Georgia. Formed in 1989, the band has consistently included Linda Hopper as vocalist and Ruthie Morris on guitar. The lineup now comprises Hopper, Morris, bassist Scott Rowe and drummer Chad Williams. Their biggest singles to date are "Slowly, Slowly", "Lay It Down", and "Open the Door". Hopper%u2014a native of Marietta, Georgia%u2014was a member of the late 1970s/early 1980s music scene in Athens, Georgia, where she befriended fellow University of Georgia student Michael Stipe in an art design class. Stipe went on to form R.E.M. and Hopper joined him in the experimental music group Tanzplagen along with Stipe's sister Lynda, and other local musicians. After the group folded the female Stipe and Hopper formed Oh-OK, whose line-up would later include Matthew Sweet and David McNair. That project ended in 1984 and Hopper briefly belonged to a band named Holiday, who released their only EP in 1987. In 1989, Morris was a recent transplant to Atlanta from West Palm Beach, Florida%u2014where she played a few shows as the guitarist for The Pockets. The two were introduced by a mutual acquaintance and became fast friends; they began songwriting when the first met. The duo had a difficult time finding collaborators to form a complete band (as Hopper described it, "We had to beg people to come and play with us.") They ended up recruiting bassist Tim Lee and McNair on drums in March 1990. Lee left the band after a brief tenure and was replaced by Shannon Mulvaney, whom Morris met at a record store. The musicians named themselves Homemade Sister after a line from Baby Doll and released their first single%u2014"Rip the Wreck"/"Merry"%u2014 on Safety Net Records in 1990, receiving airplay from Atlanta college radio stations WREK and WRAS during the early 1990s. Displeased with their name, they were briefly rechristened Swell, before they found out a San Francisco band had the same name and then Swell Dopa. They finally settled on coining the name Magnapop and frequently played in Atlanta at such music venues as The Masquerade, The Point, and Variety Playhouse. In 1990%u2014while named Swell%u2014they made their public debut at a show in Athens that Michael Stipe attended. He approached the band afterward and offered to produce some demos for them in John Keane's Athens studio in December. Their first high-profile show was at the July 1991 New York New Music Seminar along with three other bands that were introduced by Stipe. At that event, Morris gave a demo tape to Tom Engelshoven and John van Luyn of the Dutch Muziekkrant OOR. They proceeded to pass the tape to a promoter in The Netherlands who gave them some club dates as well as a spot at the side stage of the 1991 Rotterdam Festival. After the positive response they received, they were promoted to the main stage the next day. In The Netherlands, they were signed to Play It Again Sam Records, who released the Sugarland EP and Magnapop demo album in 1992. Their self-titled first album included four of the 1990 Stipe demos, and was released on Caroline Records in the United States. A music video for the single "Merry" was shot and aired in Europe. Their first commercial recording other than their independent single would be their 1992 cover version of "Pleasant Valley Sunday" for Here No Evil - A Tribute to The Monkees. They also contributed tracks to other various artist tribute albums, including "Ear" (a different recording from the one on Mangapop) for Delicacy & Nourishment - Lyrics by Ernest Noyes Brookings Vol. 3 in 1992 and 1993's recording of "Every Grain of Sand" for Outlaws Blues Volume Two - A Tribute to Bob Dylan with violinist Mamie Fike. The band also recorded the Kiss My Mouth EP with Ted Niceley and released it in Europe. Around this time, the band was so fraught from booking recording sessions, that they briefly considered breaking up. They would establish their fan base in the early 1990s through touring and the festival circuit%u2014particularly in Benelux, where they first broke through to the mainstream. It was only after they had established a fan base in Europe and gotten positive press in the United Kingdom that they first became recognized in the United States, including their native Atlanta. By the end of 1992, they were getting positive write-ups in American press, including The New York Times. They made appearances at Rocking Kolonia Festival in Maastricht in 1992, Pukkelpop in 1992, Transmusicales in 1992, A Campingflight to Lowlands Paradise in 1993, and Reading and Leeds Festivals in 1993. They also recorded a John Peel session on September 2, 1993 and a Black Session on February 25, 1994. Bob Mould of Hüsker Dü had seen the band at a show in New York City's CBGB as well as in Rotterdam%u2014he called the latter show their "turning point" and invited the band to tour with his new band, Sugar, in Europe and the United States in 1992-1993. The band requested that Sugar bassist and fellow Athens musician David Barbe to produce their major label debut album. When he refused, Mould offered to record with the band, taking them to August 1993, Pedernales Recording Studio, in Austin, Texas in August 1993. Hot Boxing was released by Play It Again Sam in Europe and Priority Records domestically on July 5, 1994. The album produced two singles: "Slowly, Slowly", which spent seven weeks on the charts, peaking on September 10, 1994 at 25 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks and "Lay It Down", which topped the 1993 De Afrekening poll. The band toured the United States supporting The Lemonheads in 1993 and played at the 1994 Phoenix Festival and Marktrock to promote the album and created music videos for "Lay It Down", "Slowly, Slowly", and "Texas". The promotional EP Big Bright Cherry included three tracks from these recording sessions as well as three self-produced songs. In 1995, the McNair and the band parted ways, with neither party giving a definitive rationale. Hopper explained "We had a hard time recording Hot Boxing, because our drummer had a lot of things in the way... Nobody wants to hurt anyone, or to cut them out, but it was just like four adults getting a divorce, and their child is the band." She has alternately explained the split due to "alternative lifestyles" between McNair and the rest of the group. The remaining trio recruited session drummer Josh Freese and engineers Sandy Solomon and Bernie Zwass to record a cover of Tom Waits' "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis" at Plus Four Recordings Studios, in Sherman Oaks, California in June 1995 for the compilation album Step Right Up: The Songs of Tom Waits. Freese would join them in November-December of that year in Los Angeles, California to record Rubbing Doesn't Help. Mould was preoccupied, so the band relocated to Los Angeles and production duties went to Geza X at his home studio in attempt to make a more "eclectic" album that would represent the diversity of their songwriting. The album would produced the singles "Open the Door" and "This Family" (the former also had a music video), as well as the EP Fire All Your Guns at Once. The band immediately set out to tour in promotion. Los Angeles musician Mark Posgay auditioned for the band in 1995 and became the permanent drummer. In July of that year, Magnapop supported R.E.M. on their Monster World Tour and continued playing in the United States and Europe, including an appearance at X-Fest in 1996. They also played their first dates in Australia and Japan in 1996 and hosted 120 Minutes on July 7. In late 1996, bassist Mulvaney left the group, citing problems of distance%u2014Hopper and Morris had relocated permanently to Los Angeles%u2014as well as a desire to focus on his family. He continued playing bass guitar and stand-up bass with Atlanta groups The Hots, The Lugosis, and Anna Kramer & The Lost Cause. Greg Urbaitis replaced him as the band continued to play live shows through 1997. Posgay quit that summer and he was replaced by former Lifter drummer Johnny Rozas, but this line-up was short-lived as the band was informed while on tour that their record label ceased to exist and they did not have any funding for future touring or recording. Compounding matters further, they were still under contract to not use the name "Magnapop" for seven more years. Hopper and Morris continued to play a few acoustic live shows as a duo into 1999, occasionally with accompaniment (such as Los Angeles bassist Billy Warburton and drummer Lance Crow) and attempted to record an EP for Vital Cog with a drum machine as backing, but ended up putting Magnapop on an indefinite hiatus. During this time, Morris also moved to Seattle, where she recorded a 2002 single with drummer Curtis Hall as The New Candidates. Hopper, Morris, and a group of Seattle musicians also demoed some Hopper/Morris songs during this period. Hall would also drum with Hopper, Morris, and Mulvaney for a few Magnapop shows in 2002-2003. The band reformed in 2003 with bassist Scott Rowe and drummer Brian Fletcher to tour the European festival circuit and record an album. In The Netherlands, Hopper would also perform vocals on R.E.M.'s cover of "Favorite Writer" on June 21 and 22. The following May, they reformed to enter Zero Return Studios in Atlanta with drummer Curt Wells as producer for their first album in almost a decade. On January 25, 2005, Magnapop released Mouthfeel on Amy Ray's record label Daemon Records and supported it with a tour through the United States. By 2005, Fletcher had left the group, and drummer Chad Williams had been recruited to replace him on the subsequent tour to promote Mouthfeel that included an appearance at South by Southwest. One of these performances was recorded for the band's first live album%u2014Magnapop Live at Maxwell's 03/09/2005%u2014which they released independently through online music distributors including eMusic, the iTunes Store, and Rhapsody. In May 2006, the band completed a tour of Belgium and The Netherlands and returned to Atlanta to begin work on the followup to Mouthfeel. They continued touring Europe in 2007 and completed writing and recording for a new album sometime prior to 2008, with the album slated to be released in summer 2009. These sessions recorded with Brian Paulson would be released as Chase Park on September 4, 2009, through digital distributors through the vanity label The Kraft Records. Between touring with Magnapop, bassist Scott Rowe also performed in Luigi with former Magnapop drummer Brian Fletcher (2003-2008) as well as Bad Magic Number with current drummer Williams. The former has released two albums%u20142003's Vamonos and Found on the Forest Floor in 2005. "Open the Door" has been covered by Eels for the single "Flyswatter"%u2014it would later be collected on Useless Trinkets: B-Sides, Soundtracks, Rarities and Unreleased 1996-2006. They performed the song several times on their Electro-Shock Blues Show tour in support of Electro-Shock Blues. Karaoke versions of the song were released by Stingray Digital through the iTunes Store on January 15, 2008. "Favorite Writer" was covered by R.E.M. on their "Bad Day" single in 2003 as well as the 2003 tour to promote In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003. Juliana Hatfield wrote "Ruthless" in honor of the band's guitarist after the two had a conversation about Camille Paglia while touring in 1992 ("We're all gushin', but I swear we really mean it, man/We're all sucking up to Ruthie.") It appeared as a B-side on the Juliana Hatfield Three singles "Spin the Bottle" and "My Sister".

Milow

Milow
Jonathan Vandenbroeck is the 29 year-old singer-songwriter, otherwise known as Milow. This last year has seen Milow have enormous chart success right across Europe with his cover of 50 Cent's 'Ayo Technology'. Milow's career began in 2004 when he was a finalist in the biggest rock contest in Belgium 'Humo's Rock Rally'. Within the next few years, and acting as his own manager, Milow achieved 2 gold singles and 2 gold albums in Belgium, eight Music Industry Awards (MIA), and he has released two albums The Bigger Picture and his second Coming of Age. In 2008 it was time for Milow's career to truly skyrocket. It began with a Belgian radio station who asked Milow to play a cover song as part of a live session. Milow opted for 'Ayo Technology', an acoustic guitar cover version of 50 Cent's original 2007 hit which featured Justin Timberlake. And it worked, to striking, creepy effect. Milow's everyman yearning and the eerie desperation in his vocals and acoustic-guitar interpretation of the track work incredibly and ingeniously, especially considering its total transformation from a 50 Cent/Justin Timberlake/Timberland strip-club jam. The cover became such a lauded success that it was released as an official single through Milow's own indie label, Homerun Records, in September 2008 and went straight in at number 1 in both The Belgium and The Netherlands singles chart. The phenomenon soon spread to the rest of Europe, where the track has had massive top 3 successes in Sweden, France, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark and Austria. The cover has now achieved bigger success than the original in Europe, with both higher single and airplay chart positions. The sexually charged, tongue-in-cheek video for 'Ayo Technology' has proved a huge sensation online where it has received over 20 million plays on Youtube alone and has been blogged about extensively, including by celebrity blogger Perez Hilton who said of the song, "Milow improves on the original tremendously. His version is sooooo good." Kanye West also gave it his seal of approval by posting the video of it on his blog. And what does the man himself want to achieve? "To keep surprising myself, to convince people that I'm more than 'that cover', to write an even stronger album and to play concerts in as many different countries as possible."

Puggy

Puggy
Its only half a decade ago that Romain Descamps (bass) met Matthew Irons (Guitar/Vocals) in their Jazz school in Brussels. Romain, who had already seen the possible match, invited Matthew to jam with his drummer friend Egil "Ziggy" Franzen (drums/Vocals). Since then, the band have played all over the continent and at some of the world's most prestigious festivals, such as Reading and Bennicassim. The three man band, Puggy, plays a whole new kind of acoustic rock that proves that you don't need an entire orchestra to get the ground shaking. Possibly thanks to their English, Swedish, French influences that range from 1920's New Orleans to 21st century metal. Matt's broken and smooth voice (yes, they're opposites) go perfectly with his dry little guitar riffs and give the band a seriously groovy sound that gets the band going. His part of the puzzle could only be completed with Romain and Ziggy's rythm section. Though Ziggy makes a point of being seriously harsh on his drumset, there's more to it than just hitting the thing, he manages to make it go perfectly with Romain's wicked bass slapping and tapping. There isn't a band today that has the experience, influence and originality of Puggy, and they're only starting. Their first record "Dubois died today" was released in June 2007. Puggy being a live band hit the road big time to promote it. They toured Europe for a month with american band Incubus, opened in Bercy (France) for the Smashing Pumpkins, did a whole french tour with Fiction Plane and headlined their one shows in England, France and Belgium. They are currently working on their next album. Some tracks are already being played live.

Paul Weller

Paul Weller
Paul Weller (born 25 May 1958) is an English singer / songwriter, leader of two successful bands: The Jam and The Style Council. In England, he is recognised as something of a national institution yet, because much of his songwriting is rooted in English culture, he has remained essentially a national rather than an international star. Born John Paul Weller in Stanley Road, Woking, he was also a central figure in the Mod revival. As the leader of the Jam, Paul Weller fronted the most popular British band of the punk era, influencing legions of English rockers that ranged from his mod-revival contemporaries to the Smiths in the '80s and Oasis in the '90s. During the final days of the Jam, he developed a fascination with Motown and soul, which led him to form the sophisti-pop group the Style Council in 1983. As the Style Council's career progressed, Weller's interest in soul developed into an infatuation with jazz-pop and house music, which eventually led to gradual erosion of his audience %u2014 by 1990, he couldn't get a record contract in the UK, where he had previously been worshipped as a demi-god. As a solo artist, Weller returned to soul music as an inspiration, cutting it with the progressive, hippie tendencies of Traffic. Weller's solo records were more organic and rootsier than the Style Council, which helped him regain his popularity within Britain. By the mid-'90s, he had released three successful albums which were both critically-acclaimed and massively popular in England, where contemporary bands like Ocean Colour Scene were citing him as an influence. Just as importantly, many observers, while occasionally criticizing the trad-rock nature of his music, acknowledged that Weller was one of the few rock veterans that had managed to stay vital within the second decade of his career.

Bell X1 regroup in late summer and write songs for what would become Music In Mouth in a house by the sea in Wexford. 2002 Second album recording starts in Ridge Farm studios in Surrey, with producer Jamie Cullum. After 4 weeks they move to the Fallout Shelter, London. The studio has no teapot!! Some moaning. The band take turns to make dinner. Some of it is shit. The world Cup happens. Music In Mouth finally finished in December, a few days after the birth of Jamie's daughter Ellie, who was both conceived and born during the making of the record. 2003, 2004 The album Music In Mouth is released on July 21st 2003, to tremendous applause, and the band play with all sorts to try to flog it. Tom McRae, Keane, Starsailor, Aqualung and Snow Patrol show them the highways and byways of the UK and continental Europe. Songs from the record appear in many TV series, from Teachers to The OC, and at home the album goes double platinum, with four top 40 singles. In July 2004, the band gather in yet another house in Wexford to write a new record. 2005 Flock is recorded in Dublin and mixed in London, with Roger Becherian producing and Phil Hayes knob twiddling. A shrine to Daniel O' Donnell (Irish singing deity, ref Cliff Richard without ever having had a brush with cool) is created in the green room, Dave creates Pistachio Nut Shell Installation and mustaches are grown. The band take a break from recording and sell out a mini tour in the USA, where they record a live session for Nic Harcourt's essential show on KCRW in L.A. Flock is released in Ireland and hits the heights of #1 in the album charts. The band leaves Island Records and sets up its own record label called BellyUp records. A live album called Tour De Flock is released - it is a 2-disc compilation featuring 16 tracks from their sold-out gig at The Point Theatre, Dublin on December 1, 2006. In 2008, Flock is released in the United States and the band appears on the St. Patrick's Day edition of the Late Show with David Letterman. On 2nd October, Brian Crosby quits saying "It's been an extraordinary privilege to be in a band with your mates for more than 15 years. I'm really grateful for everything I got to do with Bell X1, for all the adventures we had and for the great support of our fans. It's been particularly wonderful to have connected with so many people and to have got to meet people all over the world doing what I love. I look forward to continue making those connections. At the same time I'll be applauding the boys continued success." As well as promoting Flock in the USA, the band gets busy recording a new album Blue Lights On The Runway. It finally sees the light of day in 2009, with lead single The Great Defector becoming their biggest hit to date (no. 3 in the Irish charts).

The Frames

The Frames
The Frames (formed 1990) is an Irish band based primarily in Dublin. As of late 2004, the band consists of Glen Hansard (vocals, guitar), Joe Doyle (bass guitar, vocals), Colm Mac Con Iomaire (violin, keyboard and vocals), Rob Bochnik (lead guitar), and Johnny Boyle (drums). On both versions of the album "Fitzcarraldo" the band went by the moniker "The Frames DC", to avoid being mistaken with a United States band of the same name. The Frames have been together since 1990 and are a survivor of Dublin's prolific early 90's rock and roll scene. They have also been essential in the development of the current crop of emerging Irish rock bands, such as Turn. The Frames have toured with various other Irish artists, including Damien Rice and Bell X1. In December 2004, Hansard appeared on stage in a collaboration with singer songwriter Paddy Casey. The name The Frames reportedly arose from Hansard's habit, at a young age, of fixing the bicycles of many of his friends. The large number of bicycle frames lying around his house led neighbours to dub it the "house with the frames". Their new, 6th studio album, The Cost, is available in Ireland since 22 September 2006 and worldwide since 20 February 2007. Lead singer Hansard recently collaborated with Czech musician Markéta Irglová, which led to the solo album "The Swell Season". Glen and Markéta also star and perform in the John Carney movie Once (www.oncethemovie.com). The movie received several awards including the World Cinema Audience Award - Dramatic at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival as well as an Oscar for best Song for the track "Falling Slowly". On several occasions the members of The frames appear on stage during the Swell season gigs.

Supersuckers

Supersuckers
The Supersuckers are an American garage punk band. They are the self-proclaimed "Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band in the World." Following the relative success of their 1997 foray into country music with the release of Must've Been High, they have also been known to play country shows under various names, including, of course, The Supersuckers. As of April 2005, the members are Eddie Spaghetti on bass and lead vocals along with Rontrose Heathman and Dan "Thunder" Bolton on guitars. Drummer and original member Dancing Eagle recently parted ways with the band while guitarist Dan "Thunder" Bolton is on temporary hiatus. But now he is back after taking a long needed break from the road. Dusty from Agent Orange handled drums for a bit, but the new, permanent drummer is Scott Churrilla from The Reverand Horton Heat. The Supersuckers formed in 1988 as The Black Supersuckers in Tucson, AZ. The original line-up was Eddie Spaghetti on bass, Dan "Thunder" Bolton and Rontrose Heathman on guitars, Dancing Eagle on drums, and Eric Martin as the lead singer. In 1989, they moved to Seattle, WA. Here, Eric Martin left the band. The remaining members decided to continue as a four piece with Eddie Spaghetti taking over the vocalist role. They recorded numerous singles for various small labels before being signed to Sub Pop. A sampling of these are collected on the 1992 release The Songs All Sound the Same. Their first album with Sub Pop, The Smoke of Hell, was released in 1992. In 1995, guitarist Rontrose Heathman temporarily left the band. He was replaced by Rick Sims of the band Didjits for the recording of their third album, The Sacrilicious Sounds of the Supersuckers, and the subsequent tour. He returned for the recording of their fourth album, Must've Been High, which, as their first country album, was a major turning point for the band. Their fifth and final album with Sub Pop was their greatest hits release, 1999's How the Supersuckers Became the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World. That same year they released their fifth studio album, The Evil Powers of Rock 'N' Roll. In 2001, the band formed their own record label, Mid-Fi Recordings. In addition to numerous singles and several live recordings, the band released their sixth studio album, Motherfuckers Be Trippin' on this label. In May of 2005, they released the singles collection Devil's Food. The Supersuckers latest release is a 2006 EP called Paid.

The Love Substitutes

The Love Substitutes
The Love Substitutes are a Belgian band comprised of dEUS guitarists past and present; Mauro Pawlowski on drums, Rudy Trouvé and Craig Ward on guitar, and completed by Bert Lenaerts on bass. They were formed midway 2004. Their debut album (released - 14th February 2004) Meet the Love Substitutes while the house is on fire was recorded in a day and a half. The Love Substitutes are a band for music store browsers. Like the people that go to recordstores to endlessly browse in the collection, and end up buying a CD they already have, just because it is such a great CD to buy.

Triggerfinger

Triggerfinger
Triggerfinger is a Belgian band with an international sound which appeals to both younger people, who recognize Queens of the Stone Age and old rockers, who are reminded of Led Zeppelin. Triggerfinger receives rave reviews from the media. One such review claims Triggerfinger's live show makes about 500,000 other so-called rock bands instantly redundant. Triggerfinger consists of three talented musicians: singer/guitarist Ruben Block (Sin Alley and Angelico), bassist Paul van Bruystegem - aka lange Polle / Monsieur Paul - who still plays with BJ Scott and drummer Mario Goossens (Noordkaap, Monza, Hooverphonic, and many others).

Bjørn Berge

Bjørn Berge
Bjorn Berge takes the Blues and Rock to the next level! He performes with and without band. You wouldn't notice the difference. The man is a band on his own. Maybe thats why 'they' call him the 'string-machine'. Even the drumming is taken care off in a 'sole-man-performance'. Just a kick of a heavy, worn out boot on a wooden box for basedrum for example. His fingers play like he sold his soul to ,.... (Fill it in yourself) His voice speaks for itself. Blues to the utmost ground!

INFADELS

INFADELS
Infadels are a London-based rock band signed to the Wall of Sound record label. The band is known for its frenetic live shows. Their debut album, We Are Not the Infadels, was produced by Jagz Kooner and released in January 2006. The follow-up, entitled Universe In Reverse, was released in June 2008. Infadels were founded in 2003 by Bnann (vocals), Matt Gooderson (guitar, programming) and Alex Bruford (drums), who were joined shortly afterwards by Richie Vernon (live keys) and Wag Marshall-Page (Bass). The band released two singles, Leave Your Body and Can't Get Enough/Murder That Sound, on their own record label, Dead at Thirty. The awards for "Best Live Act" and "Best Dance Band" at the 2004 Diesel-U-Music Awards sealed a move to the Wall of Sound record label. In January 2005 the Infadels headed into the studio with producer Jagz Kooner to record their critically acclaimed debut album, We Are Not The Infadels. The band supported the release with an almost constant touring schedule with over 150 shows in 20 countries in 2006 alone. This included two UK tours, three European tours, two Australian tours, a number of shows in the USA & China and 35 festival dates. The band's second album, Universe In Reverse, was released in June 2008. Written largely by Bnann Watts and Matt Gooderson, and produced by Martin "Youth" Glover (The Verve, Guns N' Roses, Depeche Mode), Universe In Reverse makes the leap from dance tent to main stage, with a more urgent, rockier sound characterised by crashing guitars and revving hoover-synths. Guitarist Matt Gooderson described this evolution of the band's sound by saying: "We took the energy and guitars of a rock 'n' roll band like The White Stripes or Yeah Yeah Yeahs, then surrounded the music in deep, cinematic sounds." "Play Blind", the first material from the second album, was given away for free as a limited-time download in February 2008. The next single, "Make Mistakes", was released in April, and "Free Things For Poor People" was released in June 2008, reaching #1 on the UK Indie Singles Charts. On Tuesday the 17th of June, the band threw several thousand pounds from an office window in central London in celebration of their own "Free Things Day". The day was brought to an early close when the band and their fans were cautioned by the police. On Monday the 19th of August they were voted best band at the 2008 Lowlands festival by the Dutch public ahead of Editors and N*E*R*D. Drummer Alex Bruford is the son of drummer virtouso Bill Bruford, famous from bands such as King Crimson and Yes. Bassist Wag Marshall-Page is a friend of Danny Wallace, and is often mentioned in his books. In March 2009 the band announced via their MySpace page that they had already begun recording a follow-up to Universe In Reverse. In June 2009, the band confirmed their third album would be entitled, "The Future of The Gravity Boy" during their interview on 3FM's "That's Live!". In May 2009 the band released their first studio material since "Universe in Reverse", by making their cover of "Sweet Dreams" available on their website. The following month a new track, "Ghosts" was aired on Radio 1 by Alex Metric and backed up rumours of a return to the dance inspired sound of their debut album We Are Not The Infadels.

They appeared alongside The Cribs at the Birmingham Academy. The Paddingtons have also appeared with Dirty Pretty Things at "The Forum" in May, and again at The Spice Festival at the Hackney Empire in July 2007. Killing Joke

Killing Joke
Killing Joke are an English post-punk group which formed in October 1978 in Notting Hill, London, England. (Several sources state that they formed in early 1979.) Founding members Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards) and Geordie Walker (guitars) have been the only constant members. A key influence on industrial rock, their early music was described by critics Stephen Thomas Erlewine and John Dougan as well as industrial metal[16] and "quasi-metal ... dancing to a tune of doom and gloom," which gradually evolved over the years, incorporating elements of electronic music, synth-pop, gothic rock, and alternative rock, though always emphasizing Coleman's "savagely strident vocals." Finding modest commercial success, Killing Joke have influenced many later bands, such as Nirvana, Ministry, Amen, Lamb of God, Nine Inch Nails, Napalm Death, Amebix, Big Black, Godflesh, Tool, Prong, Metallica, Primus, Jane's Addiction, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters, Faith No More, Blacklist, Shihad and Korn, all of whom have at some point cited some debt of gratitude to Killing Joke.

Dear leader

Dear leader
Dear Leader are a Boston based rock group formed in 2003. The band takes its name from the communist dictator of North Korea, Kim Jong-il. Originally, Dear Leader was a solo project by singer, songwriter, and guitarist Aaron Perrino (formerly the frontman for The Sheila Divine) with the intention of it having a revolving lineup for each album. For live performances, Perrino recruited his friends guitarist Will Claflin, bassist Jon Sulkow (formerly of Tugboat Annie), and drummer Paul Buckley (formerly of Orbit) - all of whom now form the permanent lineup for the band. Perrino has a very distinctive aggressive vocal style which really adds to the feel of the music.

We are scientists

We are scientists
We Are Scientists is an American indie rock band featuring Keith Murray (guitar and lead vocals), Chris Cain (bass guitar and backing vocals), Max Hart (keys and guitar) and Andy Burrows (drums). Co-founder Michael Tapper (drums and backing vocals) left the band in 2007 and is currently a member of the bands Bishop Allen and Fool's Gold. They formed in 2000 in Claremont, California, United States. Their name was inspired by an awkward conversation with a U-Haul employee who was inspecting a van that the band had rented. The U-haul employee, attempting to make polite conversation, asked the three bespectacled band members if they were brothers. They said no. He asked if they were scientists, as they looked like they could be the kind of people who wear lab coats. They told him that they were musicians, not scientists. To this day, they regret telling the truth. They are not named after the Cap'n Jazz song which bears the name. The band formed while its members attended the Claremont Colleges. Murray and Cain attended Pomona College; Michael Tapper attended Harvey Mudd College. The band has released three self-made EPs (Bitching!, Safety, Fun, and Learning (In That Order) and In Action). Their debut LP, With Love and Squalor was on Virgin Records, the first three singles of which were "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt", "The Great Escape" and "It's A Hit". The album takes its name from the J.D. Salinger short story "For Esme - With Love and Squalor". They have since released LP Crap Attack, which is a collection of B-Sides, covers and other rarities, and their full follow-up album, Brain Thrust Mastery which debuted in the UK on March 17,2008 reached number 11 at the UK Album charts. On the 1st November 2007, NME reported that Michael Tapper has left We Are Scientists under amicable circumstances, and on September 18, 2007, the band announced on their website that Max Hart, a keyboardist and guitarist who has played live with them before, has joined the band temporarily. As they put it: "There's no easy answer as to how long Max will stick around. Maybe we'll grow to hate his sanctimonious ways, which for now tickle us so. Maybe he'll grow to hate our open-minded, funny, refreshing, handsome ways, thus achieving what psychologists and bookies long ago labeled impossible." And to make things even more exciting for the band, We Are Scientists is featured in the soundtrack of the 2008 film Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, which Bishop Allen - at the time featuring former We Are Scientists drummer Michael Tapper - appears in a cameo. According to Keith Murray's Wikipedia he was nominated for World's Sexiest Vegetarian 2007 and is predicted that he will be the new face of Louis Vuitton's spring/summer '09 collection. The Band's 3rd effort, Barbara, is slated for a release in June of 2010 and features ex-Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows.

Metal Molly

Metal Molly
A "One Hit Wonder" that was an influental indie rock band who had some decent hits in the '90s in Belgium and one very popular song, Orange. Currently, the band has split, but occasionally they reunite to play a gig (for charity e.g.).

Mintzkov

Mintzkov
One of Belgium's finest bands... After the tight and straightforward sounding '360°' album, Mintzkov intended to open up their music a little more. On their third full length recording, 'Rising Sun, Setting Sun', the fivesome from Antwerp reaches out for a more streamlined and more dancefloor orientated sound, in which the role of keyboard player Pascal Oorts has become more prominent. "What we were after was a little more movement within the songs", singer and guitarist Philip Bosschaerts explains. "Or rather: a different kind of movement." The new album was recorded with Jagz Kooner, a British producer whose services were previously called upon by the likes of Primal Scream, Kasabian, New Order and Reverend & The Makers. Kooner, a one time member of Sabres of Paradise and a prolific dj and remixer in his own right, heard a Mintzkov demo at his manager's office and was drawn to the "undercurrent of Krautrock" in their music. In the studio he basically tried to emphasize the anthemic qualities in Mintzkov's songs. His advice was: "If you have a great chorus, then don't hide it at the tail end of a track". Still the band regularly caused him to raise his eyebrows. The 5/4 signature of 'The Simple Future' or the downright weird structure of 'Roadbuilding' caught him slightly off balance. Gradually a lack of understanding made way for admiration. One thing to remember about Mintzkov is their songs need some getting used to. And to give him credit, Jagz Kooner made some very useful suggestions during the recording process. Although 'Opening Fire' originally presented itself as a fairly abstract, epic tune, he managed to uncover the concise pop song that lay dormant in it. He also convinced the band that 'Gemini', the quiet track that closes off the album, worked better in its stripped down guise than with layered instrumentation. Another of Mintzkov's principal assets is the gorgeous sounding harmony of Bosschaerts' singing with bass player Lies Lorquet. The latter can also be heard as a guest vocalist on the latest albums by dEUS and The Go Find. Philip Bosschaerts' lyrics are no linear stories. Instead you could compare them to a carefully woven tapestry of images and metaphors. But as you listen to 'Rising Sun, Setting Sun', it does not take long before certain themes start rising to the surface. The singer, who recently celebrated his thirtieth birthday, seems to be obsessed with the passing of time and crossing borders. There is also a huge amount of acceptance and resignation in the songs. "You shouldn't waste any time or energy on things in life you cannot change anyway", Bosschaerts says. 'Rising Sun, Setting Sun' will come out simultaneously in the Benelux countries, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. A French release is to follow in the fall. The artwork of the album was made by Kati Heck, a German visual artist currently living in Antwerp whose work can be seen in museums and art galleries all over the world. She made some drawings for the booklet and authorized the band to reproduce her painting 'Fratzenpleite' on the cover of 'Rising Sun, Setting Sun'. A fitting image to a nearly perfect pop record. Play it loud. Cold War Kids

Cold War Kids
Cold War Kids are an indie rock band from Fullerton, California, USA. Band members are Nathan Willett (lead vocals, piano, guitar), Jonnie Russell (guitar, vocals, percussion), Matt Maust (bass guitar) and Matt Aveiro (drums).

The band started in historic downtown Fullerton in Jonnie's apartment above the restaurant Mulberry St. (their first EP title). They are avid supporters of unsigned talent such as the band Electric Furs. They have toured in support of Two Gallants, Tapes 'n Tapes, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Sound Team, Muse and The White Stripes. Their music is heavily inspired by artists such as Jeff Buckley, Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground and Johnny Segment. Recently they starred in an MTV2 special titled "Cold War Kids Takeover!" They appeared on Soccer AM and were announced as Norwich City F.C. Fans. They were going to tour with The White Stripes for their Icky Thump tour, but The White Stripes had to cancel.

In 2007, they contributed to OKX, a tribute to the 10-year-old Radiohead album OK Computer, recording their version of the track "Electioneering." Nathan Willett identified Radiohead and the album as a strong influence, saying, "It's the only album that I feel compelled to say way too grandiose things about, that rock journalists have already said plenty: Like that OK Computer is the single most important album to be released during my youth and that it was a rite of passage. But that really is the truth and I have never had an emotional connection with an album quite like I have with this one."

He also explained why the band chose to cover "Electioneering" from the album: "I'm not saying 'Electioneering' is the best song on the album, but (still, a big claim!) it's certainly the most badass. It's lyrically everything we want to do - bursts of concrete imagery."

In 1992 the band released its first radio single, "Dit is mijn huis" ("This Is My House"), followed by the full album De Mens. Later came other successful singles "Jeroen Brouwers (schrijft een boek)" ("Jeroen Brouwers Writes a Book") and "Irene". De Mens became a popular Belgian rock band. The band's second album, called Ik wil meer (I Want More), contains the singles "Nederland" ("The Netherlands"), "Zij zit daar en ik zit hier" ("She Sits There and I Sit Here"), and "Lachen en mooi zijn" ("Smiling and Being Pretty"). Meanwhile, Vander linden developed a reputation as writer. Thanks to his success in the Studio Brussel radio programme Collage, he has frequently been asked to be a columnist and spoken-word performer. In winter of 1995, Vander linden did a small tour titled Solo bij u thuis. A mini-CD, Patti Blues, followed. During that same winter, the band recorded a new album titled Wil je beroemd zijn? Gaslamp Killer

Gaslamp Killer
The Gaslamp Killer is a Los Angeles-based DJ whose eclectic style ranges from psychedelia and world music to dubstep and left-field hip-hop. Associated with Flying LotusBrainfeeder Records, he made his production debut in the late 2000s with a series of EPs. Born William Benjamin Bensussen, he originally comes from San Diego, CA, whose downtown Gaslamp Districts bar scene inspired him to name himself the Gaslamp Killer in disgust for much of the patronage. Upon relocating to Los Angeles, he found a niche for himself amid the citys massive underground party scene and ultimately found a home for himself as a resident DJ at the club Low End Theory, which resulted in a series of club-sponsored podcasts. He also released a series of mix CDs, among them Gaslamp Killers (2007), Its a Rocky Road (2007), I Spit on Your Grave (2008), Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting for You! (2009), and All Killer (2009), the latter a label showcase for the London-based world psychedelia imprint Finders Keepers Records. As a producer, the Gaslamp Killer made his debut in the late 2000s, releasing, for instance, a split single with Free the Robots, The Killer Robots,n Obey Records in 2008 and an EP, My Troubled Mind, on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder Records in 2009.

Admiral Freebee

Admiral Freebee
Kent u The Walk Anyway Day? Opener Blues for a Hypochondriac is een potige fantasie over Grinderman. My Hippie Ain't Hip is swingende danceblues die verbroederen kan met Kill All Hippies van Primal Scream. The Last Song about You heeft genen van The Replacements en Always on the Run pendelt tussen eighties-Bowie en Scissor Sisters.

THE QEMISTS

THE QEMISTS

Barbie Bangkok

Plezantigheid uit Gent. Brachten vorig jaar hun eerste full cd uit (People And Geometry) nadat ze een jaartje eerder in de finale van Humo's Rock Rally stonden. Plezantigheid? Zeker weten! Creature With The Atom Brain

Creature with the Atom Brain is a Belgian alternative rock band consisting of Millionaire keyboardist Aldo Struyf (Guitar/Keys/Vocals), Dave Schroyen (Drums), Jan Wygers (Bass) and Michiel Van Cleuvenbergen (Guitar). The band have been said to make "fuzzy stripped-back rock n'roll noise with a generous helping of weird." The band's name is taken from the Rocky Erickson & The Aliens song (Which in turn was taken from the 1955 film of the same name), with Struyf citing Erickson's former band The 13th Floor Elevators and the man himself as influencing Creature with the Atom Brain's sound. After two 12" EPs on Conspiracy records, the band released their first full length album on March 24, 2008, entitled I am the Golden Gate Bridge. The album notably featured guest vocals from fellow Millionaire band-member Tim Vanhamel and Mark Lanegan, Struyf having provided keyboards and toured for the latter's Bubblegum album. Creature with the Atom Brain have since toured in support of the album, including playing cancelled shows for Masters of Reality and supporting Jesus and Mary Chain on selected shows Creature with the Atom Brain is a band with members from Millionaire,Dead Stop Mauro & The Grooms and Vandal X. Sounds like desert rock, straight from Belgium.

Around the same time Customs' first single, entitled "REX", was released. It stayed at the n°1 spot of De Afrekening for 4 weeks and popped up in the Ultratop Chart as well. July marks the recording of their first album and the mastering at the legendary Abbey Road Studios by the even more legendary Geoff Pesche (Gorillaz, Basement Jaxx, Simon Webbe, Kylie Minogue, Athlete, Coldplay and Dizzee Rascal). In the summer of 2009 they were welcomed at the Pukkelpop festival and received raving in reviews in the Dutch magazine Oor as well as in the Flemish weekly Focus Knack. In September 2009, the band was elected 'Vi.be On Air' Band of the Year 2008-2009 by Studio Brussel. One week later "Justine" was released as the first single of the forthcoming debut album. The band played a concert to remember at the Leffingeleuren Festival and proudly presented a music video for "Justine", shot in Berlin and directed by Joris Rabijns. On 26th October 2009 'ENTER THE CHARACTERS' found its way to every record store. De Morgen celebrated the release with a four star review Best Belgian Album Of The Year.Focus Knack put the four retrofuturists on their cover Belgian Revelation Of The Year and also Humo(Belgian weekly) hails them in their pages. The Hickey Underworld

The Hickey Underworld

Tim Vanhamel

Tim Vanhamel
Started playing guitar with Evil Superstars. They made 2 albums and then stopped. After his career with Evil Superstars he was asked to play guitar for dEUS, mostly at their tours. He did this until 1999 when he started his own band Millionaire. They made 2 albums. Apart from his activities with Millionaire, he also has some side projects like Coca-Cola Met God and Eagles of Death Metal. His first solo album "Welcome to the Blue House" was released early February 2008.

De Staat

De Staat
It sounds old and new, weird and familiar, ugly and sexy, dead and alive at the same time. Wait For Evolution first came into being as a solo project by singer/guitarist/producer Torre Florim. The album was recorded with help from musicians and friends. After some minor crew changes De Staat arrived at its current setting: razor sharp Jop van Summeren (bass, vocals); ever controlled Vedran The Wizard Mircetic (guitar, effects); stage animal Rocco Hueting (cow bells (!), tambourine, vocals); rock hard drummer Tim The Executioner van Delft and charismatic front man Torre Florim. This powerful coalition of five together show their love for the old roots, but they're not afraid to reinvent these roots and create something new and fresh out of it. Landfill

Landfill

Absynthe Minded

Absynthe Minded
The Belgian alternative rock outfit Absynthe Minded is heavily influenced by thirties jazz, soul, Merseyside pop, balkan and gypsy music. Absynthe Minded originally formed in 1999 as a one man band. Singer/guitarist Bert Ostyn recorded the first demos solo in his bedroom in Ghent. In 2002 Ostyn recruited Renaud Ghilbert (violin, trumpet, percussion), Sergej Van Bouwel (bass, contrabass) and Jan Duthoy (Hammond, piano) to form the Absynthe Minded Quartet, shortly Absynthe Minded. The History makes Science Fiction EP (2003) was their first release on the independent Keremos label. One year later the band finished second the infamous Belgian rock contest Humo's Rock Rally, which gathered them a serious amount of media coverage. After the addition of drummer Jakob Nachtergaele to its line-up, Absynthe Minded released their first full length Acquired Taste later that year to much critical acclaim. Their sophomore album New Day was released only a year later. With the succes of hit-single My Heroics, Part One, Absynthe Minded start touring Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. They also supported dEUS on their European tour. For the release of their next albums There Is Nothing (2007) and the self-titled Absynthe Minded (2009), the band signed with Universal.

BLOC PARTY

BLOC PARTY
Bloc Party are an English alternative rock band. In 2005, the band released their critically acclaimed debut album Silent Alarm. Their second studio album, A Weekend In The City was released on February 5, 2007 in the United Kingdom and February 6 in the United States. A third album, Intimacy, was released in August 2008 as a download and later as a CD release on October 27. The band consists of Kele Okereke (vocals, guitar), Russell Lissack (guitar), Gordon Moakes (bass, vocals) and Matt Tong (drums). Formation and rising popularity Bloc Party have been together since 2002, with names such as Superheroes of BMX, The Angel Range, Diet, and Union, before settling on Bloc Party in September 2003. Band members Kele Okereke and Russell Lissack have formed the fulcrum of these various incarnations, and were subsequently joined by bassist Gordon Moakes who answered an advert in the NME, and most recently drummer Matt Tong. Lissack and singer/guitarist Kele Okereke first met in 1998 in Essex, where Lissack had grown up and Okereke attended school. Lissack attended Bancroft's School and Okereke attended Ilford County High School until 16 then Trinity School for sixth form. They bumped into each other again in 1999 at the Reading Festival and soon after formed the band Union. In 2003 they changed their name from Union to Bloc Party. The name is a play on block party, a name for an informal neighbourhood festival, which might hire a local band as entertainment. The band have said that the name was not intended to be an allusion to the Soviet Bloc or the Canadian political party Bloc Québécois; the absence of a 'k' is purely for aesthetics. However, the band's bassist, Gordon Moakes, said on the group's official internet forum that it was more a merging of the eastern and the western "parties", in the political sense. Moakes notes that the name was not driven by politics, but rather it "looked, sounded, seemed fine so we went with it." In November 2003, Bloc Party had their track "The Marshalls Are Dead" featured on a compilation CD called The New Cross released by Angular Recording Corporation. Soon after they released their debut single "She's Hearing Voices" on the then fledgling record label Trash Aesthetics. The band got their break after Okereke went to a Franz Ferdinand concert in 2003, and was able to thrust a copy of the single into the hands of both Franz lead singer Alex Kapranos and Radio One DJ Steve Lamacq. Lamacq subsequently played the song on his radio show, labeling the track "genius", and invited them to record a live session for the show. The buzz generated off the back of the single sparked some A&R interest, leading to another single "Banquet", this time released by the label Moshi Moshi, and to the eventual signing with indie label Wichita Recordings in April 2004. Bloc Party's own variation of spiky guitar rock draws on influences such as The Cure, Gang of Four, The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Joy Division, and XTC, but the band says that some of these bands are just comparisons. Does that last bit even mean anything? The drumming on Bloc Party songs is often influenced by the London dance and R&B scene whilst the guitar demonstrates typical indie sharpness with alternative panned chords and fast chord picking. To achieve their unique guitar style, BOSS echo effects equipment is implemented and is particularly apparent on the track "Like Eating Glass". The musical style of A Weekend in the City is more varied, however, drawing influence particularly from more expansive sounding bands, including Radiohead. As large as Bloc Party has been over recent years, they are still in their youth. They have developed unique songs and sounds, but they are still trying to find their own personality. The song "Flux" was released at the end of 2007 as an add-on to A Weekend in the City. The band is coming to terms with its growth and development, and should find itself with its next album. Silent Alarm; Their debut album Silent Alarm, released in February 2005, was met with critical acclaim and broke sales records, being voted by NME critics as the 2005 album of the year and reaching #3 on UK album charts (selling platinum in the UK). The second single from the album "So Here We Are" made the top 5 on UK charts. Further singles "Banquet" (which reached #13 in NME's "Top 50 singles of 2005"), "Helicopter" (which featured on the FIFA 06, Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure, Project Gotham Racing 3, Burnout Revenge and Guitar Hero III game soundtracks) and "Pioneers" (July 2005), whilst failing to repeat this success, managed to make dents in the UK top 20. The animated video for the single "Pioneers" was number one in the NME video charts for 4 weeks and was made for a tiny budget in four weeks by the Shoreditch based Mini Vegas design agency. Even though the band was met with good reviews from critics in America, Bloc Party failed to break through to the pop or rock charts in the US. Bloc Party became one of the most popular new bands of 2005, and the established electronic group The Chemical Brothers soon collaborated with Okereke for "Believe", a track on the Brothers' Push the Button album. An album of remixes of tracks from Silent Alarm was released at the end of August in the UK. This remix album, Silent Alarm Remixed, retained the album's original track list and includes remixes from the likes of Ladytron, M83, Death from Above 1979, Four Tet and Mogwai. During July, they recorded two new tracks (titles were given of "Hero" and "Two More Years") with Silent Alarm producer Paul Epworth. The latter, "Two More Years" was released on October 3 to coincide with their October 2005 UK tour. The songs were released as an EP titled Two More Years, accompanied with a re-release of Silent Alarm, which included "Two More Years" itself along with former single "Little Thoughts". The single format of "Two More Years" contained a remix of "Banquet" done by The Streets, for which a video was also recorded. The band also contributed the track "The Present" to the Help: a Day in the Life compilation, the profits of which benefits the War Child charity. The single "Banquet" was sampled in 2006 by DJ Green Lantern for a track with Apathy, Tak (of rap duo Styles of Beyond) and Mike Shinoda. The track, entitled "Bloc Party", appears on Green Lantern's Fort Minor: We Major mixtape. A Weekend in the City; The band released their second album, called A Weekend in the City on February 5, 2007 in the UK and February 6 in the United States. The album debuted at #12 in the Billboard 200 with 48,000 copies sold. It became available via the UK's iTunes store a day ahead of schedule, on February 4, and reached the #2 spot in the Official UK Chart. The album was produced by Jacknife Lee. The first single, "The Prayer", was released on January 29. This single had been located on their MySpace since November 22, 2006. The next single, "I Still Remember", is their first American single. In the build up to the release of the album, Zane Lowe aired a live set from Maida Vale featuring a mix of old songs and new ones on his evening radio show on BBC Radio 1 on January 30, 2007. On February 1, 2007, A Weekend in the City was made available to listen to for free through the band's official MySpace page. The band's first gig following the release of AWITC was on February 5 at Reading Hexagon. It was broadcasted live on BBC's Music Station 6 Music that night as well. Bloc Party played in the Live Earth concerts on July 7, 2007 and T in the Park and the Oxegen Festival that same weekend, as well as Glastonbury and the Reading and Leeds Festivals 2007. On 27th October, Bloc Party showed "Flux" to the world at their gig during the BBC Electric Proms, and on November 12th, they released the single. It charted well, reaching #8 in the UK charts, and was well received both by critics and fans, despite the new electronic direction. Intimacy (2008-present) On 7th July, Bloc Party premiered new track "Mercury" on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show following a countdown timer on Bloc Party's website. The track took a bold new direction, moving away from guitar rock, with an experimental electronic sound. The track charted at #16 in the UK charts when it was released as a single on the 11th of August. On the 18th of August, in a webcam chat with fans, they announced that their third album, Intimacy, would be released for download on their website on the 21st of August. The album contained On the 23rd and 24th of August, Bloc Party played second headliners before The Killers at Reading & Leeds Festivals, opening their set with "Mercury", and also playing "One Month Off" from their new album. They also played an entirely unplanned encore of "She's Hearing Voices". The album Intimacy was released in physical formats on October 27th, featuring additional tracks, such as current single "Talons". As of October 2009, the band has gone on hiatus. Drummer Matt Tong has hinted he may not come back if the band reform. Kele has recorded a solo album to be released sometime in 2010, Gordon has a side project called "Legionnaire" and Russell also has a band called "Pin Me Down".

SOME SAY YES SOME DO LESS

THE GODFATHERS
