Andrew Weatherall

Andrew Weatherall

Andrew Weatherall is a key figure in UK dance culture. He was there at the beginning of UK club culture in the late 80's just as Ecstasy was changing the dancefloors into something more open minded and loved up. He is a founder member of the Boys Own fanzine that documented what was happening then in sarcastic, trenchant terms - contrasting harshly with the sometimes "fluffy" or hippie-ish rhetoric spouted by some caught up in the acid house movement. The Boys Own parties were considered a destination for the smarter set and for musical connoisseurs, unlike the lowest-common-denominator mega-raves which were kicking off at the same time. Weatherall found initial acclaim with an audience outside the dance crowd when he remixed Primal Scream's "I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Had" into the monster track "Loaded". He has shown a talent for stripping music down to fundamental components and then adding something extra to turn it into something beautiful. His remixes with Primal Scream and production work on "Screamadelica" are breathtaking and so far in advance of the rest of the music industry that he has always been a maverick. His production work with One Dove provided one of the great early post Acid House "chill out" albums in the melancholic "Morning Dove White" and he provided classic remixes for artists from Stereo MCs to James and Happy Mondays. As the 90s progressed and his DJ contemporaries moved into the "superclubs", playing formulaic house and trance, Weatherall always chose to evade easy categorisation, playing sets of anything from heavy dub to pure detroit electro, spurning the huge paychecks of fellow Acid House veterans, but consolidating his reputation as a true music lovers' favourite. His clubs including Sabresonic and Bloodsugar became legendary, and he continued to forge links with musicians both underground and mainstream. Later work - with his bands Sabres of Paradise and Two Lone Swordsmen - has taken in trip hop, dub, techno, funk, electro and even rockabilly and goth rock on the most recent TLS album "The Double Gone Chapel". His latest release - and his first under his own name - "The Bullet Catcher's Apprentice" is a return almost to classic balearic values that he championed over 17 years ago when DJing at the seminal early house nights in London and around the M25. Always innovating and never stopping this man is a modern legend, a raconteur, writer and polemicist as well as DJ and musician, who perhaps hasn't really had the proper attention he deserves - but appears to like it that way. 65DAYSOFSTATIC

65DAYSOFSTATIC
65daysofstatic began in Sheffield, United Kingdom in 2001 as Iain Armstrong, Paul Wolinski and Joe Shrewsbury. Contrary to popular belief, they did not originally form to try to write music to fit the unreleased and little known John Carpenter film, 'Stealth Bomber' (starring Kurt Russell). Instead, they took their name from the 1954 CIA-backed coup d'etat in Guatemala. There, the CIA disabled Guatemalan communication systems while spreading propaganda, leading to the overthrow of the government. 65daysofstatic (also known by the abbreviation 65dos or 65days) are an instrumental electronic and post-rock band from Sheffield, UK. Their debut album, The Fall of Math (2004), was released to critical acclaim. The band intersperses heavy, progressive, guitar-driven instrumental sections with both idm-esque programmed and live drums. Their albums, as a result, maintain a distinctively gritty, almost industrial feel. Armstrong left in May 2003, Feedle (Graham Clarke) then joined for a brief period and played a part in writing the band's first single from The Fall of Math, Retreat! Retreat!. By the end of 2003 Rob Jones (drums) and Gareth Hughes (bass) had been recruited, increasing the band to four members. Gareth left around the time of the release of their debut album, The Fall of Math, to be replaced by Simon Wright. The second album, One Time for All Time (2005), had a discrete success. In the same year they remixed Burn from the album Crimson by Alkaline Trio. The track appears on one 7inch vinyl out of a set of 2. The third LP, The Destruction of Small Ideas (2007), was indeed a hit with fans and critics. It was anticipated by the release of its single Don't Go Down to Sorrow. Their live album, Escape from New York, was released on 20th April 2009 and featured two new tracks: No Use Crying Over (Some Techno) and Four Score and (Some Drum 'n' Bass). The fourth LP, We Were Exploding Anyway (2010) will be released on 26th April 2010. It has been anticipated by the release, in Japan only, of a single from the album entitled WEAK4. Interesting fact: Early Arctic Monkeys have been supporting 65daysofstatic on their tour http://www.65daysofstatic.com http://www.myspace.com/11488230

aMute

aMute
aMute is a project born in the mind of Jérôme Deuson. He was born somewhere near Namur and raised somewhere in the south of Belgium. He was given his first guitar at the age of 11 and never really looked back since. He followed the well known path of playing in a couple of bands, moving to the big city, playing in a couple of more bands, few concerts, so on. In 2002 Jérôme started his solo project called aMute, a compromise between his passion for so called "Post Rock", with its traditionally sad melodies, and his taste of all glitches and treatment softwares. After two albums released on the Canadian label Intr-Version Records, aMute has now become a band. Samuel Volan, Thomas Venegoni and Julien Paschal teamed with Deuson to deliver the message of their brand new album "Infernal Heights For A Drama" out on Stilll in March 2009.

Man Man

Man Man
Based in Philadelphia, PA, Man Man is an experimental indie band that incorporates Eastern European and circus-esque styles in their music, creating a unique sound. The band consists of Honus Honus (lead vocals, piano, percussion), Pow Pow (drums, auxiliary percussion), Critter Crat (aka Cougar) (guitar, trumpet, bass, marimba, vocals), Organ Freeman (synth, organ, accordion, vocals), and Chang Wang (alto sax, bari sax, vibraphone, melodica, flute, percussion, vocals).

Their style has been compared to a mixture of Tom Waits, Frank Zappa, and Captain Beefheart. Man Man is known for their distinctive live shows where the members of the band dress in white tennis outfits and don war paint. During their sets the band does not take breaks between songs in order to keep a constant energy level.

Man Man has released two LPs with Ace Fu Records: The Man In The Blue Turban With A Face (2004) and Six Demon Bag (2006). In November 2007 they signed with Anti- to release Rabbit Habits (2008). Their second Anti- release is slated for the spring of 2010.

ANSATZ DER MASCHINE

ANSATZ DER MASCHINE
In 2006 Ansatz der Maschine set a new standard for Belgian indietronica with the brilliant album 'The Postman Is A Girl'. Now the much-anticipated follow up is here. 'Painting bad Weather on her Body' illustrates how Ansatz der Maschine has grown. It's Mathijs Bertel's second solo-album, yet it fully integrates the Ansatz live band. The subtle electronics are blended with acoustic violins, saxophones, drums, Rhodes, electric guitars, voices ... The result is a warm, slightly distorted mash up of great song writing, producing and musicianship. Ansatz der Maschine plays live as a four piece band, with visuals. Ansatz der Maschine originally started as an experimental one-off project of soundtechs Mathijs Bertel & Alexander Baert. They joined forces to create a smooth blend of click 'n' cuts and live guitars. Their first recordings were assembled on a demo CD: 'Hide For The Beast'. The innovating tracks got them to win the CJP contest 'Het jong 2004', designed to give young artists some promotion (and a cash prize of 5000 euro!). The media attention this generated resulted in a bunch of live shows and the continuation of what was planned to be a temporary project. Ansatz der Maschine is: Mathijs Bertel - electronics, alto violin, keys; Bram De Vreese - alto sax, guitars; Jan Dhaene - drums, rhodes, moog; Ruben Vercaemer - tenor sax, rhodes, moogn (source ansatzdermaschine.be)
