45s room
The 7" 45 rpm record was introduced in 1949 by RCA as a smaller, more durable and higher-fidelity replacement for the 78 rpm shellac discs. The first 45 rpm records were monaural, with recordings on both sides of the disc. As stereo recordings became popular in the 1960s, almost all 45 rpm records were produced in stereo by the early 1970s.

"Discovering records is like discovering oil. The days when oil was found just bubbling up through the ground are long gone. Now you have to dig deeper, which is exactly what we do..." (Jazzman Gerald, 2011)

"I generally play 50% deep funk, 30% soul, 10% Northern, 5% bopping blues and 5% new releases, music that enriches the soul, things that take people past the chicken adverts and give them experience of music which the soul scene takes for granted. For me there's nothing better than playing a classic soul track and knowing that half the people in the room have never heard it before." (Keb Darge, 2004)

DMX Krew

DMX Krew
DMX Krew, also known as EDMX is the recording name of Ed Upton. He has released 6 full albums on Aphex Twin's label Rephlex Records, one full album on Legowelt's Strange Life Records, and numerous singles/EP's for both Rephlex, his own Breakin Records, and various other. DMX Krew's sound spans several electronic music genres but had mostly been rooted in early electro-pop/breakdance type music. The release of The Collapse of the Wave Function EPs are geared toward a different more experimental direction. In 2005 Ed Upton up and coming artist camp cassidy koept threw their weight into a very different sound.

Bear Damen

Bear Damen
Founding member of NON Records, Bear produces what could be the soundtrack to a possessed Atari game. His synth-driven pop creations command the dance floor with funky grooves and bass-heavy vocals. Inspired by the Paris Hilton environments of our time, Bear's songs create an aura as pastiche as it is fun. 'Gulfstream EP' serves as a debut effort and exemplifies Bear's distinctively ironic, dance-ready sound.

Lefties Soul Connection

Lefties Soul Connection
The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the Lefties Soul Connection sound is the word 'RAW'. Sound and music wise the band is influenced by funk acts like the Meters and the JB's, but also by hip-hop acts like for example Jurassic 5, the Roots and Beastie Boys. In general they have their backbone in the raw (obscure) funk & soul from the 60s till early 70s but a lot of tracks are based on hip-hop feel/sound/structure (open drum breaks, ready to sample riffs).

They also have some '(mod) rock' influence in their sound, this can be especially seen and heard at live concerts and you can hear it in the aggressiveness of their sound. Their goal is to rock the crowd hard with heavy beats, low bumping bass, screaming Hammond organ and tight guitar riffs, sometimes accompanied by vocals or chants.

The band is not strictly a retro band, they're not trying to copy an old soul/funk band; an important difference with some other (raw) funk & soul bands of today. It's not their intention to play funk exactly the same like the JB's or the Meters used to do. These bands will always be the best because it's the sound they've created. Lefties Soul Connection just picked up some of their grooves and philosophy and mixed it with hip-hop breakbeat / song structure and (mod) rock aggressive sound/performance style. What you get is an explosive performance with tight grooves and the heaviest live beats you ever heard (we like to call it the "shock 'n' awe" style or garage funk).

Slowly they've been building a fan base within the international (raw) funk & soul (b-boy) community with their sound and especially at performances but, because they're not strictly retro, they also broke out of this scene and got noticed by people that are more into hip-hop and even rock and dance. A good example of a track getting noticed outside the funk community is their interpretation of Organ Donor, a dj Shadow track.

A large part of their recordings is instrumental. Basically they've set up the band similar to the Meters and Booker T & the MG's. Like these bands, their music is centred around groove/sound and not so much lyrics/a singer. At live shows though, more vocal tracks are added. These tracks are sung by guitar player Onno Smit; before starting the band together with Alviz, also a soul singer.

Sare Havlicek

Sare Havlicek
Slovenian based Sare Havlicek (Jure Havlicek) is a bit of a hoarder. A hoarder of old synthesizers, drum machines and most of all 70's & early 80's euro/cosmic disco sounds. A trip around his luxurious studio is a bit like a day at the synth museum. All these elements go into Sares current cosmic-disco music. By the sound of his music you would think he had Italian blood.

Sare's production career began way back in 1988 (he has had several aliases including Freeze, Hyperactive, Moob and Sare Muratore). So one thing's for sure; Sare is no newcomer when it comes to attention to sound quality. All tunes come with no samples or loops inside! Let's disco!

Dj Kwak

Dj Kwak
Growing up with a "musical" dad listening to Miles Davis , Coupé Cloué, Tito Puente , Barbara and their peers ,Kwak received his first shock discovering hip hop with SugarHill Gang and heavy rock with Motörhead. At the same time, he started rehearsing with punk - hardcore bands as a frontman with critical acclaim on the then flourishing belgian scene. Then, by 1994, he started organising concerts and parties and soon enough was programming dj's for the Kafé Kan'h in Brussels (From 1999 to 2004). In 2002, he started organising his own Strictly Niceness with teammate Dj Eleven, a monthly funk and soul party with crazy vibes taking place at the Biberium (Ex - Flanagan's). As a dj, he has crossed the wax with such international greats as Paul Murphy (Afroart Records), Rainer Trueby (Compost Records), Mad Mats, Nostalgia 77 and Quantic (Tru Thoughts Records), Cris Prolific (45 Scientific), Soul Rabbi, Gruyere Dj (New Cheese Records) and the cream of the crop among belgian dj's : Bass Culture Soundsystem, Murvin Jay, Bernard Dobbeleer (Classic 21), Dj Simon Le Saint (PIAS/ Skinfama) Dj Piiit, Doc CLD, K'Bonus (Pulver Records), Snooba (Vinyl Amalgame), Onda Sonora Soundsystem, Brekbit (FM Brussel), Raggamuffin Whiteman, Dj Lefto, Smos, or Ipiki Ookami for example. He also played as opening act for such artists as Aka Moon, Alice Russell or The Peas Project. Kwak is currently displaying his vibes in all and every bar in Brussels ( Roi des Belges, Cafe Dirty @ Dirty Dancing, Belga, Le Tavernier, La Maison du Peuple, ...), in Antwerp, in Luxemburg ... He is also broadcasting the BACK TO NICENESS RADIOSHOW on Fm Brussel (www.fmbrussel.be) each and every saturdays from 6PM to 7PM. Expect classics and discoveries, rarities and insanities in funk, soul, hip hop, ska, rocksteady and more... The next step remains to be written.

PURA VIDA

James Pants

James Pants
The son of two Presbyterian ministers from an American backwater called Spokane, James Pants went from being the teenage DJ for a black nationalist rap group to a multi-instrumentalist who can count on fans as diverse as Flying Lotus, Zane Lowe, Erol Alkan and XL's new teen hip-hop internet sensation Tyler The Creator, who calls James "one of the most creative fucking people to walk this earth".

James met Stones Throw Records head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf after his high school prom and dropped a debut album in 2008, Welcome, which told the tale of a lone music obsessive who synthesized a staggeringly broad record collection into a coherent LP in a style he dubbed "fresh beat", taking in '80s boogie, synth experiments, garage rock and much more.

Since then James has toured the globe, released Seven Seals (a tribute to his beloved '70s cult and New Age records), a self-titled third album, and uprooted from Colorado to Cologne, where he works as a studio engineer.

THE YEAR IS 2001 AND THE PLACE IS TEXAS. Stones Throw head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf is DJing while a sharply dressed young man approaches the DJ Booth with his Prom date in tow to formally introduce himself. Thus begins the story of James Pants. What began as a dream Prom night to see his hero DJ went to an internship at the label to eventually landing the ultimate fantasy by being signed to the roster and championed as the 'next big thing' by none other than Peanut Butter Wolf himself - on top of critics like Busy P, Urb, XLR8R, & Dazed & Confused Magazines. Mr. Pants is a purveyor par excellence of that unmistakable "fresh beat": 80's Soul, Electro Boogie, Early Rap, New Wave, & Post-Punk Disco, all of which can be found on Welcome where James plays drums, keys, guitar and sings. From a radio perspective, what format does this fall under - this new style that Pants has invented? Do you play it on the groove alongside the likes of Skyy, Cameo, or even Pharrell (listen to 'KA$H')? Or do you play it in the underground alongside the up-to-the-minute electro pulse of Egyptian Lover, Cybotron and even Too $hort? The answer, of course, is both! There's enough Pants to fit any style.

The Backlash

The Backlash
The Backlash is a Belgian two-man electro-punk-house project manned by veteran DJ Eric "Powa" B. and relative newcomer Julian K. After releasing some EP's in 2003-2004, their first full-length "Serial Cleaner" was released end 2005 on Surprise Records, a sublabel of Lowlands.

Nilfisq

Nilfisq
Nilfisq is a young neo-soul/funk band from Antwerp, Belgium. Their music mainly consists of nice upbeat funk songs with neo-soul influences which are very attempting to dance to and all self-written.

The Sweet Vandals

The Sweet Vandals
Funk! Soul! Passion! We know the Soul & Funk Bands which have been put together towards their own casting. The Sweet Vandals have searched and found themselves, this genre is their passion and it rewards in the sound - a real sound! This state of 'realness' has been reached on only a few recordings in the last few years; Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators and of course The New Mastersounds. The Vandals are different from these combos. They pass on Horn Sections to put exactly on the record how it's realized on stage! Only after five months their first 7" single "I Got You, Man!" (Funkorama Records) has become a classic, Keb Darge (Deep Funk Session, London) has praised this Funk monster through heavy rotation!

Bonde do Rolê

Bonde do Rolê
Bonde do Rolê is a baile funk inspired group from Curitiba (Paraná) - the biggest city of the brazilian south - consisting of MCs Pedro D'Eyrot, DJ/MC Rodrigo Gorky, Marina Vello (who left the band after "internal problems" late 2007), and has been replaced by Ana Bernardino and Laura Taylor. They started in their hometown Curitiba in the south of Brazil, mixing rock guitar riffs with funk carioca (sometimes known as baile funk or Brazilian funk). By putting together a unique blend of Rio de Janeiro's aggressive baile funk beats heavily influenced by the mashup school of 2 Many DJs and the like, they draw from rock 'n roll classic riffs and electro-infused pop stardards making raw party bliss! Bonde has been used in various media after being signed to the British label Domino Records: solta o frango is heard in a worldwide campaign for the cellphone company Nokia, and the same track was used in another commercial for the hit series Ugly Betty on Channel 4 in the UK. GQ magazine used their song Office Boy for the behind-the-scenes photo shoot of actress Jessica Alba. Web sites Myspace: Bonde do Rolê. Domino records: Bonde do Rolê. MONEY MARK

MONEY MARK
Mark Ramos-Nishita aka Money Mark is a producer and musician who has collaborated with the Beastie Boys many times, after meeting them as their carpenter. Most of his work is underground. He also appears on the first Banyan album as the Freeway Keyboardist. His first album, the relatively obscure Mark's Keyboard Repair (1995), was made up of keyboard driven pop-funk songs recorded at demo quality. It was followed up by the "Third Version EP" in 1996 and Push the Button in 1998. Whereas his 1996 EP was similar to his debut, "Push the Button" was extremely eclectic, combining aspects of Rock music and Pop with Soul, Funk and Hip-Hop. This inventive LP was met with good reviews, as was his 2001 follow up "Change is Coming" which had a tropical yet danceable disco and funk sound.

Tony Allen

Tony Allen
Born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1940, of mixed Nigerian and Ghanaian parentage, Tony Allen taught himself to play by listening to records made by the American jazz drummers Art Blakey and Max Roach. He began working as a professional musician in 1960, gigging around Lagos and variously playing highlife and jazz. Today living in Paris, Allen has long been acknowledged as Africa's finest kit drummer and one of it's most influential musicians, the man who with Fela Kuti created afrobeat - the hard driving, James Brown funk-infused, and politically engaged style which became such a dominant force in African music and whose influence continues to spread today. Allen had to overcome strong parental opposition to realise his dream of becoming a professional musician. "My parents were...not keen. Back then, in Lagos, musicians were more or less thought of as beggars, or worse. But I just put it in front of them. I was an electrical technician, but I wanted to make a change. My mother was never happy about it, but my father, who was an amateur musician, eventually agreed." Allen started out as a jazz drummer. "Art Blakey was my big influence, and before that, before I started club crawling, it was Gene Krupa. When I started, I tried to play like Gene Krupa. Then I discovered Blue Note Records and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers - it opened up another style to me. Max Roach was important too. I studied some lessons he wrote in Down Beat magazine about how to play high-hats. Most drummers in Lagos never used them, they were just a decoration on the kit, and I'd always thought that was something incomplete." It was, however, no easier making a living playing jazz in Lagos than it was anywhere else outside the USA in the early 1960s: Allen's first extended gig was with the Cool Cats, a highlife band fronted by Sir Victor Olaiya (the so-called "Evil Genius of Highlife", although Olaiya's group was then pretty much a "copyright band," playing covers of other artists' hits). When the Cool Cats split, Allen returned to his job as an electrical technician before joining other highlife groups including Agu Norris and the Heatwaves, the Nigerian Messengers, the Melody Angels and, finally, the Western Toppers. Allen was playing with the Western Toppers when he met Kuti in 1964. "Fela had been presenting a jazz records programme on NBC (Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation) on Friday nights. He decided he wanted to form his own jazz band and play the music himself in the clubs. He'd tried out several drummers, but none of them were what he was looking for. He began to think there was no-one suitable in Africa. Then someone recommended me to him. I auditioned - and he asked me if I'd learnt to play in the USA! I had the style he wanted. We played strictly jazz together for about a year, as the Fela Ransome Kuti Jazz Quartet, before we started Koola Lobitos." Koola Lobitos, formed in 1965, played a mixture of highlife and jazz. According to Allen, the music started out so complex and full of changes that the audience didn't understand what they were hearing. "In five minutes we'd use like five different arrangements (time signatures). It was just too complicated for the audience. They couldn't understand what was happening - except, possibly, the musically inclined ones who knew that the music was different from all the local things they'd been listening to. But it was a bit like showing off, so we decided to simplify things, giving each song two hook lines and a straightforward arrangement so that people wanted to dance." (A few years later, at the urging of funk musicians including Bootsy Collins and other members of James Brown's band they met on tour in the US, Kuti and Allen simplified things further. "One idea, one song" became the Afrobeat paradigm). Koola Lobitos' nascent Afrobeat would have been nothing without Allen's innovative bass drum patterns, which were unlike those used by any other kit drummer working in Lagos at the time. His bass drum dealt a double whammy, b-boom, b-boom. Where other drummers would play a single beat, Allen made it a double, giving Afrobeat its trademark forward thrust. "The bass drum patterns are unique to me," says Allen. "I'd never play one, one. Any drummer can play that straight beat. But that's just like putting a metronome in there." In 1969, Koola Lobitos made an extended visit to the US, where they lived a hand to mouth existence. "The living conditions were rough," says Allen. "We started on the east cost, where there were lots of Nigerian students, and we did well there. Then we went west, via Chicago, to San Francisco and Los Angeles." Audiences, which were still largely composed of Nigerians, grew smaller. "Fela got fed up just playing to Nigerians. He said if we were going to play to Nigerians, we might as well do it in Nigeria where there were a lot more of them." The Koola Lobitos album The '69 Los Angeles Sessions, made on the hoof towards the end of the tour, documents the emergent Afrobeat style of the band. Kuti's political consciousness, nurtured by his politically active parents back home - and soon to become a defining feature of Afrobeat - was sharpened in the US, where he befriended a black American woman called Sandra Isidore. A member of the Black Panthers, Isidore introduced Kuti to the ideas of such people as Malcolm X, Angela Davis, the Last Poets, Stokeley Carmichael and Eldridge Cleaver, all of whose thinking played some part in the development of Kuti's own political philosophy, Blackism. Once back in Lagos, Kuti renamed the band Africa 70 (it had in the US briefly been Nigeria 70, and was later tweaked to Afrika 70). With Allen forging the music's vibrant signature rhythms, and Kuti its incendiary lyrics, the duo had, within a few years turned Afrobeat into a style rivalling the then reigning juju and highlife in popularity. "Fela said I sounded like four drummers," says Allen. "I was the only one who originated the music I played." Fela used to write out the parts for all the other musicians. If Allen sounded like four drummers, it could have been because, in his mature Afrika 70 style, he was drawing on four different styles - highlife, soul/funk, jazz and traditional African drumming. A unique and mighty sound. (In 1970 when James Brown played in Nigeria, his arranger made careful study of Fela's band and Allen's drumming in particular, as did Ginger Baker, another disciple). Allen stayed with Kuti for close on 15 years, from 1964-1979/80 (it wasn't an overnight parting of the ways). He played on all Afrika 70's albums up until 'V.I.P. - Vagabonds In Power' (after which the band briefly dissolved, before Kuti formed Egypt 80). These include the classic mid-decade stream of discs documenting the post-colonial iniquities of Nigerian society and Kuti's (and Afrika 70's) increasingly bloody conflicts with the authorities - among them 'Alagbon Close', 'Everything Scatter', 'Expensive Shit', 'Yellow Fever', 'Zombie', 'Kalakuta Show', 'Before I Jump Like Monkey Give Me Banana', 'Sorrow Tears And Blood' and 'Fear Not For Man'. The band enjoyed massive popularity in Nigeria and elsewhere in West Africa, but (at home) were subject to constant harassment, and at times brutal physical attacks, from the army and the police. In 1975, Allen recorded his debut album, 'Jealousy', the first of three made with Afrika 70 and produced by Kuti. 'Progress' followed in 1976, 'No Accommodation For Lagos' in 1978. But by 1978 he was ready for a change of scene, and a year later he parted company with Kuti. The touring entourage had grown to outlandish proportions and there was talk of him not getting due respect or recompense for the contribution he had made to the creation of Afrobeat and the success of Afrika 70. "It's not a big story," says Allen today. "I was tired, I'd just had enough." His final studio collaboration with Kuti was on an album made with American vibraphonist Roy Ayers, 'Africa Centre Of The World' (released in 1981). In 1979 he formed his own band, Tony Allen and the Afro Messengers, and recorded his first album away from Kuti, 'No Discrimination'. Allen spent the next few years in Nigeria, and from 1981-83 led another Afrobeat band, the Mighty Irokos. The group enjoyed local success, but Allen had tasted international breakthrough with Afrika 70, and he had his eyes on a bigger stage. In 1984 he left Lagos for London, living there for eighteen months before moving to Paris, where he lives with his family today. "Lagos was too small for me and Fela. It was a small place, and I wanted room to take off without causing competition," says Allen. "I eventually chose Paris partly because the British immigration people were giving me difficulties, but also because African music was more happening then in Paris than in London, and my record company (Barclay) was in France. It was the only place I felt I could exercise my knowledge and make a living." Soon after arriving in Paris, he recorded an album with producer Martin Meissonnier, but, amid talk of unsatisfactory mixes, it remains unreleased. While still in London in 1984, with his band Afrobeat 2000, Allen recorded the album N.E.P.A. - Never Expect Power Always. The title track was a sardonic commentary on the erratic Lagos power supply which then, and still today, leaves the city at the mercy of regular power cuts. (The body responsible for the supply, or the lack of it, was the Nigerian Electrical Power Authority, hence the acronym). By the mid 1980s, although few other Nigerian musicians had committed to Afrobeat - "too difficult," says Allen - the music had made a profound influence on the other prominent Nigerian style, juju. Afrobeat's kit drum had become a regular part of juju line-ups (which had until then been dominated by talking drums), and Allen's style was picked up by juju drummers. Juju rhythm guitarists had also adopted Afrobeat's nagging "tenor guitar" riffs. Allen was one of the first to introduce the rhythmic power of Afrobeat to juju. In 1984, he toured with juju superstar Sunny Ade and guested on his 'Aura' album, to which he contributed one of his own songs, "Oremi," and he toured with Ade the following year. Throughout the 1990s Allen was a sought after session drummer and he collaborated with a range of artists including Randy Weston, Groove Armada, Air, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Manu Dibango and Grace Jones. During the years since Fela's death in 1997 Allen has become recognised as Afrobeat's torch bearer and he is held in reverence by musicians and fans alike. Recently the style has seen an upsurge of interest outside of Nigeria with dedicated clubs opening up in Europe and the USA and groups such as Antibalas and Masters At Work bringing the music to a new public. Allen's albums have become more frequent. 'Black Voices' was released in 1999, followed by 'Home Cooking', 'Tony Allen Live', 'Lagos No Shaking' and now, in 2009, the definitively tough and rocking 'Secret Agent'. The album with The Good, The Band and The Queen was released in 2007, but Allen's association with Damon Albarn goes back some half dozen years. It came about after Allen heard the lyric "Tony Allen got me dancing" on Blur's 2000 song "Music is My Radar" and invited Albarn to Lagos to guest on Home Cooking. His association with Albarn continues, and includes the African Express events which aim to introduce African and European musicians to each other and encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas. Three decades after Allen made those classic albums with Afrika 70, Nigeria remains riven by the same injustices that the band protested against so vividly and courageously. The lot of the urban poor and middle classes is, if anything, worse today than in it was in the 1970s, and Allen has no regrets about basing himself in Paris. "Nigeria's not getting any better. Why else is everyone wanting to come to Europe? It's all misadministration and corruption, survival of the fittest. It's a complete motherf**ker of a place." "Music is my mission," says Allen. "I never get satisfied and I'm still learning from others. The musical world is very spiritual, and I don't think there's an end to it. As musicians, it's our mission to keep going."

Amp Fiddler

Amp Fiddler
Joseph "Amp" Fiddler, originally a keyboardist from Detroit, is a funk and soul musician who has worked with Enchantment, the Dramatics, George Clinton, Moodyman, Jamiroquai, The Brand New Heavies, Fishbone and Maxwell. Along with his brother, Budz, he realsed the album Mr Fiddler in 1990 on Elektra. His debut solo album Waltz of a Ghetto Fly was released in 2004. The new album'Afro Strut' is the follow up to that record and a sign that his assured and open-minded approach to his own sound has engendered a stylistic leap forward, creating in the process a diverse and ambitious second album. As a man who has achieved almost every goal he has set himself, whether it be becoming a multi instrumentalist talent, joining George Clinton's Funkadelic, or developing a base for like minded musical luminaries to collaborate and create, it was always to be expected. 'Waltz...' was more of a vibe, a full stop on a long period of his life to that point and a drawing together of unfinished songs and feelings from his youth. 'Afro Strut' was to be the fresh start that sees Amp able to look further forward as well as back to his roots, and as a result has the feel of a more fully-realised vision. The array of collaborators and contributors to the record further emphasises this approach. Opener 'Faith' sets the standard with Amp joined by Raphael Saadiq on a timelessly deep ode to spirituality of a different kind. The UK's Justin Crawford (one half of Manchester-based dj/production outfit Unabombers) is brought in for two of the standout disco-flecked cuts 'Right Where You Are' and 'Ridin'. Amp's Jazz heritage rolls to the fore on the uplifting 'If I Don't', recalling his days in doo-wop outfit The Enchantments as a teenager and laying open the musical make up of its creator. The sadly departed Jay Dilla's group Slum Village, another product of Camp Amp, the basement recording studio at Amp's 7 Mile home that has also had local luminary Moodyman in regular residence, is represented on the bumping 'I Need You'. Tony Allen, the man accredited with creating afrobeat alongside the great Fela Kuti, provides the drums on Afro Strut and another great, Jay-Z collaborator, Grammy winning string arranger and former member of MFSB Larry Gold steps up on album closer 'Hustle. By referencing many of the great contemporary black music movements be it Jazz, Doo-Wop, Afrobeat, soul or hip-hop, Afro Strut is, like its predecessor, without modern day comparison. The collusion of a lifetime of influences and experiences that are drawn on, used, discarded and Amp-lified across twelve rich slices of raw funk. www.ampfiddler.com www.myspace.com/ampfiddler

SUPERTHRILLER

SUPERTHRILLER
Imagine if peak period Prince had relocated Paisley Park to a subterranean studio below London Bridge and enlisted Tony Hancock as a writing partner: such is the sound of Superthriller. Not your typical avant-pop combo, Andrew Roland and brothers Ben and Max Ringham combine warped lo-fi funk, twisted humour and straightforward songwriting genius to create perfect pop nuggets that simultaneously move the hips and stimulate the mind.

esg

Since their inception, ESG has affected post-punk, no wave, dance-punk, hip-hop, and various styles of dance music such as house. They fell in with the late '70s and early '80s NYC no wave and post-punk scene, they had their music sampled countless times, and they became a playlist staple at '70s and early '80s dance clubs like the Paradise Garage and the Music Box.

ESG (Emerald, Sapphire and Gold) formed in 1978 in the South Bronx. The band originally consisted of the four Scroggins sisters -- Deborah (bass, vocals), Marie (congas, vocals), Renee (vocals, guitar), and Valerie (drums); although line-up changes have happened many times since their formation, including bandmembers who were neighbors, daughters of original members, and even male band members.

The Scroggins mother bought the band's instruments when they were still teenagers to keep them supposedly busy and away from trouble. They had to teach themselves their instruments, but it wasn't long before they started playing shows and clubs. Soon, Ed Bahlman, the owner of 99 Records (a record shop and a label that included Y Pants, Liquid Liquid, Bush Tetras, and Konk on its roster), was impressed enough to take them under his wing as a manager and producer. Consequentially, ESG and their music fell in with the no wave and post-punk scene of New York City thereafter, even though their music was neither abrasive in anyway or art conscious -- but the group's sparse, heavily rhythmic, and unpolished sound fit right into the New York scene in which Bahlman's label was a significant factor. Bahlman booked them successfully at punk clubs and they were a hit in the underground NYC scene.

After a few singles and EPs in the late '70s and early '80s the band hooked up with Factory Records producer Martin Hannett while he was in the area recording A Certain Ratio's first album, "To Each" in 1981. The 6 song ESG 12" EP on 99 Records from the same year features a particularly unique and widely sampled track, UFO, using Hannett's fondness for reverb, flangers and feedback to make a song that was so unusual it has been very widely sampled, along with other tracks from that record. That EP is a rarity on vinyl that is highly prized by DJs and copies typically sell on Ebay for about $50 with only a dozen or so copies surfacing there in recent years.

Their first full-length LP came with 1983's Come Away with ESG. Unfortunately, their record label had to soon close because of Bahlman's legal battle with Sugarhill over Grandmaster Flash's sampling of Liquid Liquid's "Optimo" caused him financial and mental stress, with Sugarhill's fall into receivership -- and inability to award 99 Records their due settlement -- acting as the final straw. With the closing of 99 Records, ESG disbanded shortly thereafter (1984), but re-formed in the early '90s, heralding their comeback with a self-titled 1991 compilation of previously released material.

In the years since their original formation, the group's work had become popular among hip-hop artists searching for samples, with such acts as TLC, Wu-Tang Clan, Beastie Boys, Big Daddy Kane, Gang Starr, Tricky, Jay Dee (J-Dilla) on his Donuts album, and indie rockers like Unrest and Liars. The group addressed this issue on the 1992 12" EP Sample Credits Don't Pay Our Bills. The album, ESG Live!, was release in 1995 and featured both old and new material.

The band played what was to be their final show on Friday, September 21, 2007 at Chicago's Abbey Pub, during the Estrojam festival. But the band announced that they reformed in 2008 to play their first returning show at NYC's Santos House Party on September 13, 2008. They also claimed that both more shows and new music will emerge in the future.

Bottin

Bottin
Bottin (Guglielmo Bottin, 1977) is producer, dj and sound designer based in Venice, Italy Take a youth spent against a background of old Italian Giallo soundtracks, some also John Carpenter's film music, add in late 70s Italian disco influences, a touch of free and easy west-coast vibe and a smattering of kitsch. That just about half describes Bottin.

MAYER HAWTHORNE

MAYER HAWTHORNE
Mayer Hawthorne grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and vividly remembers, as a child, driving with his father and tuning the car radio in to the rich soul and jazz history the region provided. "Most of the best music ever made came out of Detroit," claims the singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, who counts Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, and Barry White among his influences, but draws the most inspiration from the music of Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland and Eddie Holland Jr. The "retro" tag is added to almost any contemporary work that sounds like it was originally recorded between 1966 and 1974, and Hawthorne, among the newest contributors to the genre, is aware of how trends come and go. After being introduced to Stones Throw label head Peanut Butter Wolf by mutual friend Noelle Scaggs of The Rebirth, even his current boss was skeptical. "He showed me two songs and I didn't understand what I was listening to," Wolf recalls. "I asked him if they were old songs that he did re-edits of - I couldn't believe they were new songs and that he played all the instruments." And after meeting in person, it was even harder for Wolf to believe that Hawthorne was also the lead vocalist. Few expect such heartfelt sentiment to come from a 29-year-old white kid from Ann Arbor, but he has caught the ear of his family at Stones Throw, as well as BBC Radio 1 host Gilles Peterson and producer/DJ Mark Ronson.

J.rocc

J.rocc
In 1992, Jason Jackson, internationally known as J.Rocc, launched his vision of forming a DJ crew comprised of talented musicians, by introducing to the world Southern California's first turntable band - the Beat Junkies. A prized accomplishment enthusiastically received by worldwide audiences, J.Rocc continues to invent musical styles that display his creative expertise. Highly recognized for his funky showcases and original arrangements, J.Rocc has clearly distinguished his place in music history. J.Rocc began his DJ career in 1985 with PSK, a DJ group based out of Huntington Beach, CA. Possessing the imagination and skills to alter the traditional purpose of the turntable, J.Rocc applied his artistic talent by using the turntable as his musical instrument. His individual approach towards developing his ingenious collections consists of focusing on smooth, rhythmic transitions and building an energetic vibe. Maintaining the entertainment level plays a major role in producing explosive performances, and J.Rocc achieves this excitement and dynamics without "killing" the original recordings. Heavily influenced by jazz legend John Coltrane, world-renowned Hip-Hop producers Dr. Dre and DJ Aladdin, and the departed Hip-Hop radio show on KDAY (1580 AM) featuring the comedic personality of Russ Parr, J.Rocc absorbed their influential contributions to help drive his musical genius. His striking list of awards and accomplishments demonstrates his excellent ability to apply his creative gift. Collectively, the Beat Junkie band comprised of J.Rocc, Babu, Melo-D, and Rhettmatic, claimed the title of International Turntablist Federation (ITF) World Champions two years in a row (1997 and 1998). In 1999, Rawkus Records seeked J.Rocc and Babu to join the talented cast of musicians on "Sound Bombing 2", a classic Hip-Hop compilation featuring internationally acclaimed artists including Pharaoh Monche, Mos Def and Common. J.Rocc and Babu greatly impacted the production of this project by exhibiting their exceptional turntable talent and musically powerful imaginations. J.Rocc continues to inspire worldwide audiences through his entertaining performances and showcases of musical creativity. In 1998, J.Rocc delivered his turntable brilliance and shared the stage with Hip-Hop phenomenons Talib Kwali and Mos Def during the U.S. Coca Cola tour, which included sold-out shows throughout the country. This past year, J.Rocc traveled nationwide with Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, MC Supernatural, and the Beat Junkie crew on the heavily documented tour entitled "Word of Mouth". J.Rocc's individual discography includes numerous innovations that continue to gain global recognition. In 1999, J.Rocc released "Live at the Sex Machine". This masterful compilation highlights J.Rocc's skilled application of the group's signature "Beat Junkie Style", in which he precisely blends the musical genres of breaks, Hip-Hop and reggae. In 2000, J.Rocc introduced a second volume to this successful project entitled "Sex Machine Today". In this latter release, J.Rocc continues to demonstrate his original style of producing illustrious musical arrangements, and repeatedly, is able to capture audiences stemming from diversified realms. As a leading figure in the media circuit, J.Rocc has appeared in all media outlets, both in the national and international markets. Feature stories in publications including the Source, URB, Rolling Stone, and Mass Appeal, highlight his unique achievements and untouchable musical expertise. J.Rocc appeared in the internationally respected film entitled "Keepintime" (2001), a documentary created to exemplify the parallel between the art of original drumming and the art of drumming using a turntable as the musical instrument. The film portrayed this relationship by capturing performances by legendary drummers Paul Humphrey, Earl Palmer, Roy Porter and James Gadson, as well as recording the drumming techniques of turntable drummers J.Rocc, Babu, DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist. In 2001, J.Rocc released a number of innovative individual and group projects. As the group's "Funky President", he played a major role in the production and delivery of the first Beat Junkie album entitled "Classic Material", which was released last August on the group's newly established, independent record label, Beat Junkie Sound. "Classic Material" features innovative tracks produced and performed by the Beat Junkie artists between the years of 1995 - 2000. Another notable project presented a collaboration between J.Rocc and fellow Beat Junkie member Babu, known internationally to the world as the Bumrush Brothers. Together, these talented musicians introduced two timeless masterworks entitled "Gold Chain Music" featuring Planet Asia and Evidence (Beat Junkie Sound), and "X-ecution of a Bumrush", a track from the X-ecutioners' album entitled "Built from Scratch" (Loud Records). In July 2001, J.Rocc released "Syndromes Remix", which hit record stores throughout the world and received international praise. This heavily demanded mixtape is a follow-up to his original creation released back in 1995. The audible recordings allow audiences to travel through a musical journey in which they are introduced to music legends, including Roy Ayers, Instant Funk, Minnie Riperton, and Grover Washington Jr. J.Rocc's most recent masterpiece was introduced to the world the latter part of March 2003. "Play This (One)" and "Junkies Pick" released on Stonesthrow Records, are classic compositions written, produced and conceived by J.Rocc. This highly anticipated record is just one of several projects J.Rocc is set to release in 2003. This year, the "Funky President" is poised to take-off.

Juice Blender

Juice Blender
For well over a decade Juice Blender was part of a Ghent based deejay duo that was formed in 1995- adequately named Juice Blenders! In the early days they played mainly eclectic sets with a lot of funk, breakbeat and house influences. Continuing on this path, they got to know the work of people like LTJ Bukem and Photek - and were absolutely blown away by it. This style of drum and bass was really welcome at a cosy venue called Sous Sol, where they established their first Thursday night residency. Around the same period, late 96, they started the radioshow Liquid Flavaz, on Urgent FM, which is still running today. Their first breakthrough for a larger audience came in 1998, when they were asked to play at the legendary Eskimo parties. After proving that they could easily rock bigger crowds, bookings followed for the D&B room at various raves and festivals. Meanwhile they also became residents at the Decadance club (nowadays, this is know as the Steam sessions on Wednesdays). In the year 2000 one of the guys took over Fried Chicken Records, a store specialising in drum & bass releases. The shop became an important meeting place for the up-and-coming talents and the established deejays in the scene. However, it turned out to be all but profitable, so in 2004 it was time to move on. Meanwhile Nico JB started working as a promoter for Democrazy and was able to take the party concept Mystic to a higher level, together with another DJ team from Ghent: Dobe 'n' Daze. To date Juice Blender has played at nearly all the major events in Belgium and occasional gigs in the Netherlands. In April 2005 he was exposed to a worldwide audience in the Breaking New Talent feature on BBC radio 1Xtra. Also, J.B. has established a recording studio called Blender Productions, where he delivers mixdown/mastering for upcoming acts such as Stan & Mook (Soul:R). Various productions are in the pipeline... By the end of 2006 Juice Blenders, in plural, are no more. Long live the Juice Blender! Since the start of his solo career the sounds have become more subtle, leftfield and personal. The focus is now to present the drum & bass genre as a true artform that will continue to push boundaries across the globe!
