wixel
Wixel is the musical outfit of Wim Maesschalck. Founder of the slaapwel records label, which only releases music dedicated to fall asleep to. He also is responsible for some guitar duties in an indie rock band called Guernica, and a folkband called Bloedrood.

The music of wixel has often been described as melancholic winter music. It's a warm and organic mix of acoustic instruments and gentle electronic treatments with a lot of care for detail and subtle nuances. Comparisons have been made to bands ranging from Hood to Fennesz, from Hélios to Sigur Rós.

In 2002 wixel debuted with a few cd-r releases, but it wasn't until 2006 that he came into the spotlight with his more acoustic sound of his official debut "Heart". The album was well received and resulted in live shows throughout the Benelux and the UK, where he also released a tour ep called "Herfst". In 2007 he released a split 7" with his other alter ego Bloedrood on Kaspar Hauser Records while working on a full length record that was released in December 2008. Wixel delves more into the acoustic, fuzzy and atmospheric sound with even more care for balance and pace.

Live, wixel is a band playing music that isn't always recorded on an album, but that clearly takes cues from the melodies of his records. It consists of four people, except Wim there's Ulrike Dragon on guitars and electronics, Karen Smedts on guitars and drums, Nil Ramos on drums, electronics and guitars.

RUDY TROUVE SEPTET

RUDY TROUVE SEPTET
The Rudy Trouvé Septet was formed around Rudy Trouvé around 2001, by that time a quintet. Rudy's biographie is huge, he was/is key-character of bands like Kiss My Jazz, Lionell Horrowitz, dEUS, Dead Man Ray, Rudy & the Wally's and The Love Substitutes. Most of the songs are about his daily life, fear, love and boredom, these themes also re-appear in his paintings. Many of his musical compositions are referring to his extensive record collection, and influences of Chet Baker, Joy Division, Rip & Panic and The Stooges are highly apparent. Besides playing in all different bands on account of getting bored with a single style after a while, and thus keeping things fresh, Rudy was released solo in 2000 on 'subsonic 6', an album with him on one side, and Lou Barlow on the other (on the vinyl version, it also was released as a CD). The album was released by the label 'Rosa'. This was merely a collection of old 4-tracks, and a few new ones for the occasion. The first true Rudy Trouvé band release on Heavenhotel was released May 2002, the single 'une chanson', which preceded the first full CD '1999-2002'. By the next CD, titled 2002-2003 the quintet was upgraded to sextet:: Rudy Trouvé (guitar, voice) , Sigrid Van Rosendaal (trumpet, keyboards) , Aarich Jespers (drums), Elko Blijweert guitar, keyboards), Dimitri Daggelinck (bass), Geert van Bever (Guitar). For the coming release planned in September 2007 Joris Caluwaerts (piano) was added and once more the band was upgraded, and called the Septet.

Jim White

Jim White
Jim White is a southern gothic alt-country singer-songwriter. He has released four albums as a solo artist. While his music is based in americana, he borrows elements from rock, rhythm and blues, and even electronica, often piecing sounds together in the lo-fi cut-and-paste fashion of artists like Tom Waits. His albums have featured a wide variety of collaborators, such as Victoria Williams, Morcheeba, Aimee Mann, Barenaked Ladies, and Joe Henry. He is signed to David Byrne's Luaka Bop label and appeared in the BBC documentary, Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus, which looks at musicians inspired by the culture of the American South. Not be confused with the acclaimed Dirty Three / Cat Power / Smog / P. J. Harvey / Nina Nastasia drummer, who also had a recent collaboration album "You Follow Me" with Nastasia under the name of Nina Nastasia And Jim White http://www.jimwhite.net/ http://www.myspace.com/officialjimwhite

The Gourds

The Gourds
The Gourds, an American alternative country band, formed in Austin, Texas in 1994. Evolving, in part, from the Picket Line Coyotes and the Grackles, the Gourds original line-up consisted of Kevin Russell (vocals, guitar, mandolin), Jimmy Smith (vocals, bass, guitar), Claude Bernard (accordion, guitar, vocals), and Charlie Llewellin (drums, percussion). Llewellin was replaced by current drummer Keith Langford shortly after the second album was recorded, and multi-instrumentalist Max Johnston officially joined after being invited to play on their third album. By the following album, Johnston had also become the band's third songwriter, though Russell and Smith have continued to share the bulk of those responsibilities. Despite a sizable amount of original material, the Gourds are probably best known for a song they did not write, and for which they initially did not receive credit. A full twelve years after its live debut, fans can still be heard calling out for the band's cover version of Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice", often before they have even taken the stage. This has led some to consider it an albatross, but the band continues to play the crowd pleaser, adding various impromptu covers to its mid-section as a way of expanding its appeal. While the Gourds studio efforts have all been well received, their high-energy live performances and constant touring have earned them the reputation of a band that must be seen to be appreciated. As a result, they enjoy a dedicated fan base, that is happy to follow them from town to town, and have become a favorite among those who tape live music Members * Kevin Russell - vocals, mandolin, guitar * Claude Bernard - accordion, organ, guitar * Jimmy Smith - vocals, guitar, percussion, bass, water bowl * Keith Langford - drums, harmonica, washboard, toy guitar * Max Johnston (of Uncle Tupelo & Wilco) - banjo, fiddle, guitar, vocals Discography Studio albums Dem's Good Beeble - 1997 Stadium Blitzer - 1998 Ghosts of Hallelujah - 1999 Bolsa de Agua - 2000 Cow Fish Fowl or Pig - 2002 Blood of the Ram - 2004 Heavy Ornamentals - 2006 Noble Creatures - 2007 Haymaker! - 2009 Studio covers and live originals Gogitchyershinebox - 1998 Shinebox - 2001 Soundtracks Growin' a Beard - 2003 Something's Brewin' in Shiner - 2004

Gert Vlok Nel

Gert Vlok Nel
Gert Vlok Nel is a South African poet, as well as a singer / songwriter. In South Africa he is quite famous, and ever since a Dutch documentarist decided to film a portrait of this artist in the summer of 2006 he is being discovered by more and more people. Because of the strong relationship between Afrikaans and its inheret background rooted in Dutch, the lyrics are just as powerful for Dutch speaking listeners. The lyrics and the music complement eachother in a serene and harmonious way. His first CD is called Beaufort Wes Se Beautiful Woorde (2006). Really rare music. In his lyrics he uses a mixture of Afrikaans and English.

Two Gallants

Two Gallants
Ever since 2002 when Adam Stephens (guitar/vocals/harmonica) and Tyson Vogel (drums/vocals) began making noise at house parties and on street corners they've slowly been carving out their own creative space. In a world where bigger is often considered better and quality is sacrificed with ease, Two Gallants have risen against the tide with their cathartic, stripped-down sound and depth of material to forge an intimate bond with a wide array of fans.

"The intensity of our interaction while playing is clearly quite different" explains Stephens. "I think it's the product of both of us pushing our own selves so hard and so far that out of necessity we have to lean upon each other to keep from flying off the track."

There is no substitute for an honest, deep connection built on trust and respect. Through the shared experience of growing up together in San Francisco, Two Gallants have pushed each other into a unique and timeless spectrum of music. They craft emotional, visceral, intelligent songs that remind us of America's folk, country, and blues traditions but are fuelled with the energy of punk. Through Stephens' first-person narratives, murder ballads, and drunken outlaw tales, Two Gallants have tapped into the universal struggle of the human condition as they channel the pain of men twice their age.

Speaking of their on-stage relationship, Stephens says, "[As a guitar player] I stick to the basic structure of the song, Tyson listens to the changes in vocals and melody; he draws them out and intensifies them. Tyson has a plan but it never grows old and lost in routine." While Vogel's unorthodox drumming and gut-wrenching support vocals give the songs life, it's Stephens' words that give them a soul. "There's something about the way he sees things" says Vogel. "He's very convicted, clear and emotionally pregnant. There's a real unique clarity and truth to what he sees and how he puts that forward through music and writing."

As the band continued to grow, tour, and write new songs, they found a home at the seminal indie label Saddle Creek in both the US and Europe. Always known as a record label that does things their own way, the fertile grounds of Saddle Creek have provided Two Gallants with the freedom to grow as they constantly work to refine their craft. In response to their nearly 200 international shows last year and two solid albums (2004's The Throes and 2006's What The Toll Tells) Two Gallants have garnered remarkable praise in almost every major music publication including MOJO, Rolling Stone, Harp, Paste, Uncut, Pitchfork, Vice, NME, to name a few. But it's the pair of 2007 releases, the acoustic EP Scenery of Farewell and self-titled third full-length, that finds the band coming of age in the studio. "The live context is always where we've felt the most comfortable, it's where the magic or the spiritual side of things comes in" offers Vogel; "where as recording has taken some warming up to, until now."

After working with Alex Newport (Mars Volta, At the Drive-In) on a new mix of The Throes, they developed a creative compatibility and asked him to produce their next two albums. By combining Newport's personality, experience as a musician and recording engineer with a new batch of songs the band had written specifically for the new record, Two Gallants have created their most fully-realized, cohesive piece of work to date.

While the new album documents the band's growth and maturity, as Stephens says, "This record was a bit of a return to our beginnings. I think that's why we decided to have it stay simple and self-titled." By harnessing the power of what they do live and relying on each other, Two Gallants expands on what makes this band so special: their exceptional songwriting and raw chemistry.
