Turntable Dubbers: Shepdog, Serial Killaz, ...

Them Dubbbers!

King DJ aka DJ 4T4

Yellowman

Yellowman
Yellowman (Jam) gained wide popularity in the dancehall reggae scene of the 1980s. He brought a salacious, controversial element to his lyrics, and this overtly sexual type of wordplay became known in the reggae music world as "slackness"

Chronixx

Chronixx
Chronixx was the 'stage' name his friends bestowed on him, replacing the name 'Little Chronicle' he was given as the 'junior' to his father, the artist Chronicle. A little star amongst his peers, he had shown a love for music and song writing from an early age. He was born in Jamaica October 10, 1992 and was named Jamar Rolando McNaughton. His father, a musician, recognised his talents and nurtured him in an environment in which he could grow into whatever area of music he chose. Always accompanying him to the studio, Jamar grew up around the likes of Burro Banton, Norris Man and the legendary Gregory Isaacs.
With a big smile and an engaging personality, he confidently set out to make his mark in music, by writing his first song 'Rice Grain' by the age of five and going on to be choir director and worship leader at 11. Coached by Danny Browne, he recorded his first song with him in 2003. Always displaying his versatility, Jamar, as a young man at St. Catherine High School, harmonised for gospel artistes such as Jermaine Edwards and reggae artiste Lutan Fyah.
At 14 years, he started producing and 'building riddims' for artistes such as Konshens and Munga Honorable and composing riddims such as the 'Freezer Riddim' for Icebox Records and voicing artistes such as, Popcaan for Maverick Records. While focusing on academics, with a special love for Visual Arts, Chronixx knew that his inner voice was coaxing him to let his own voice be heard.
After his brother's death in 2009, Chronixx became more inspired to 'push out' and as fate would have it, in that same year, met some 'brothers' who have undoubtedly impacted on the promising artist he is today. The synergy he found with Romaine 'Teflon' Arnett of ZincFence Recordz gave birth to the creation of a singer, stepping out militantly with a unique voice and armed with lyrics and an accompanying musical sound, set to capture his place on the reggae music stage.
In 2010, as if on a mission, Alty 'J.O.E' Nunes impacted on the lives of not only his brothers, Aijah & Jahnoi, but on Chronixx as well. They started working as a team and after Joe's passing in February 2011, Chronixx, in honour of the Jah Ova Evil legacy, took his career to another level. Instead of going on to Edna Manley College as planned, he, along with other members of the Jah Ova Evil family, released singles such as Behind Curtain, African Heritage, Wall Street and Warrior.
Today, Chronixx credits his versatility and his professional stage presence to the early lessons he received from his father Chronicle, who always shared his own experiences and encouraged his son to go one step beyond with each performance. Chronixx is not disappointing his father, his family or his friends who know that the 'sky is the limit' for this young man who sees 'music as his mission.' YES I!!!!!

Mr Lexx

Mr Lexx
Swag digi !

Supersonic was founded in the summer of 1998 in Berlin, Germany, when Panza (Selector) recorded his first set of mix tapes. He soon started selecting on his own playing a few clubs in Berlin. Spider (MC) joined the sound in 1999 and after a brief period the two became a well known tag team travelling all over the country. In 1999 Uzzla joined the two and became an important addition to the crew. In 2005 Danny Fyah left his own Firesound and joined Supersonic in addition to Spider on the mic. Then in 2006 the "Remix-Don" Jr. Blender joined the sound and added his skills as a selector and producer. Stacious

Stacious
Just when you thought it was safe for the kids! Along comes Stacious spitting lyrics like rounds from an AK 47. This DJ has all the ingredients for success in this primarily male dominated genre and judging from her idols (Lady Saw and Bounty Killa) you get the impression right away what She is all about. A poignant mixture of some of the best qualities that they both offer. Stacious has been much sought after by producers locally and abroad and is currently managed by DocMac entertainment. She has been getting heavy rotation on radio since the release of her debut single "Thug Gal' and more popular single "Gangsta Big Up", made well known by it's connection with "Passa Passa". The most recent singles "Falling down" and "Goodas Clap" are ripping up the airwaves and climbing up the charts.Being named the EME's 2008/2009 best new female dj, proves she is not just talk. Her catalogue is growing rapidly with songs such as; Tired, Good life and It's over. This is just the begining, there is definately more and even hotter that is yet to come. By all accounts Stacious will be around for a long time and can and will stand up to any lyrical competition from her male/female counterparts. With her credits to date, her sheer talent, tenacity and personality the "Gangstress" is most certainly "READY FI DEM".

Tanya Stephens
Tanya Stephens (July 2, 1973) born Kingston, Jamaica, is a one of the most influential female Jamaican reggae artists that emerged in the late 1990s. Stephens is most known for her hit "Yuh Nuh Ready fi Dis Yet." The single was later featured on the Reggae Gold 1997 compilation album.

Capleton

Capleton
King Shango, King David, The Fireman and The Prophet. A wise man once said that a prophet is not without honour save in his own country and so it has been with Capleton. While the veteran DJ's words and works long ago earned him the title of "The Prophet", the respect and honor that should rightfully be his have been a long time coming. "Anytime you try to uplift righteousness and upliftment of the people them, then you ah go get a fight", says the hottest entertainer in the worldwide reggae fraternity. "Bob Marley come do it and them fight him. And when Bob Marley dead, that's when they start to endorse him. I already aware of this, I am not unaware. So I know the more them fight I is the more I get stronger" In the fast-moving world of dancehall reggae, fame and success are hard to obtain and easy to lose. Fans can be fickle, and trends change in the blink of an eye, leaving most entertainers with painfully short career spans. Only a rare few can remain relevant from year to year, holding their audience's attention and leaving them crying for more. His lyrics are deep, precise, and thoughtful. His stage shows are nothing less than dynamic, explosive performances. But his remarkable staying power and longevity may be Capleton's greatest gift. Born Clifton George Bailey III on April 13, 1967, in the rural parish of St. Mary, Capleton earned his future stage name from friends who were so impressed with his sharp reasoning skills that they named him after the most famous lawyer in town.

Lutan Fyah

Lutan Fyah
" ... Rastafari livity means to tolerate and to live side by side with those of other faiths no matter which race, no matter which class. The purpose of Haile Selassie is to see that we become one in unity and love ... and that is my purpose." Lutan Fyah Much, much more than a deejay, much more than a singer and more than a chanter too Lutan Fyah also plays guitar, keyboards and the kette drum. He holds strong beliefs in originality at all times and so he is a songwriter too and, as the New Millennium has progressed, he has developed his very own idiosyncratic and unique vocal styling. He embraced the Rastafarian religion at the age of sixteen but his songs are not always strictly Rasta. As a "living man with work to do" he ranges over all subjects and everything and anything can inspire him to write, to play, to chant, to sing and to deejay. Preaching to the converted can prove to be a fairly easy task but to take the same message all around the world is a totally different ball game. Born Anthony Martin in Thompson Pen, Spanish Town in the parish of St. Catherine, Jamaica his formative years were spent in an environment where music was omnipresent. His grandfather ran a Sound System and artists such as Lt. Stitchie, Papa San and Lady G would gather in the family's yard to practise and perfect their skills on the microphone. "I grew up around a Sound System. Music flows through my bones ..." Lutan Fyah Music proved to be an incredible influence on young Anthony but sport, and football in particular, proved to be another and he started playing as a midfielder, a position where he excelled, in teams in his local community. He graduated to his school team, St. Andrew Technical High School, and eventually made the grade as a professional in Jamaican Premier League clubs De la Vega and Constant Spring; but the call of music proved too strong to resist and in 1999 he hung up his football boots and took the first steps towards a musical career. Like so many others before and after Anthony Martin trod that same dispiriting round of Kingston's studios and record producers where he was met with indifference and at times ignorance. However there was a different reception at Mark Myrie's Aksum Studios where the young chanter's promise was immediately recognised and he passed his audition with flying colours. The man now known as Lutan Fyah spent what he terms his 'internship' at Gargamel where he recorded over sixteen songs for Buju Banton while also freelancing for other producers. His debut release was actually for the Crazy Hate label and 'Ambassador' signalled the arrival of a significant new talent in Kingston's musical maelstrom. The resurgence of the Rastafarian influence and the Bobo Dread phenomenon in reggae music was an indicator of serious times in Jamaica as a new generation of singers and deejays came to the conclusion that the only credible solution to the current malaise was to "love the word of God and thy neighbour as thyself". Others, who shall remain nameless, were not slow to realise that this presented a heaven sent opportunity to jump aboard the bandwagon for a handy ride on the fast track to fame and money. Many futile attempts were made to hitch a ride to stardom and the words of God were readily mouthed by tongues that had previously been wrapped around the more worldly concerns of the dance hall. But artists such as Lutan Fyah were there for the long run for "the race is not to the swift" and his music was at all times driven by his deep beliefs. His devotion to the Rastafarian religion has meant that he has stayed the course while so many pretenders have fallen by the wayside.

Jah Mason

Jah Mason
Born in Manchester, Jamaica, reggae singer Jah Mason made his debut in 1991 with the single "Selassie I Call We." Recorded for Junior Reid's record label, the single appeared under the name Perry Mason, a nickname Mason had picked up during his childhood due to his ability to settle arguments. He always preferred the country to the city since it was easier to meditate there and as Mason claims, "I can communicate with the birds and the trees." After hooking up with David House, who had successfully guided singer Capleton to international fame, this spiritual side of Mason began to flourish. In 1995 he became a member of the Rastafarian branch Bobo Ashanti, changed his performing name from Perry Mason to Jah Mason, and began recording conscious reggae where the message was as important as the music. Jamaican hits like "My Princess Gone" and "Lion Look" and guest shots on a few Jah Cure singles appeared before the full-lengths Keep Your Joy (Ghetto Technology) and Unlimited (Reggae Vibes) both landed in 2002. Never Give Up (On The Corner) from 2004 found him working with international producers including Dan "Piloni" Kark from Israel. The 2006 album Princess Gone: The Saga Bed appeared on the VP label, which was distributed by the worldwide giant Universal.

Sizzla

Sizzla
Sizzla Kalonji (real name Miguel Orlando Collins) is a Jamaican reggae musician. He was born on 17 April 1976, in St Mary, Jamaica, of devout Rastafari parents and raised in August Town. He is unusually prolific, even by Jamaican standards. Sizzla has worked with such artists as Mobb Deep. Sizzla, along with reggae recording artists such as Capleton, Buju Banton, and Anthony B, are credited with leading a movement toward a re-embracement of Rastafarian values in contemporary reggae music by recording material which is concerned primarily with spirituality, social consciousness, explores common themes, such as Babylon's corrupting influence, the disenfranchisement of ghetto youth, oppression of the black nation and Sizzla's abiding faith in Jah and resistance against perceived agents of oppression. Sizzla has over 40 full completed albums sold in record stores to date, the most popular which have been "Black Woman & Child" and "Da Real Thing" on the Digital B label, "Praise Ye Jah" on Xterminator, and "Rise to the Occasion" on Greensleeves. Recently, however, he has come under fire for the homophobic content of many of his lyrics, and the advocacy of violence against gays.

Beenie Man

Beenie Man
Anthony Moses Davis (born August 22, 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica), better known by the stage name Beenie Man, is a well established reggae artist and DJ. He was involved in the music industry from ayoung age when he won the Tastee Talent contest in 1980. Only one year later, when he was eight years old, he recorded a single, "Too Fancy", with record producer "Junjo" Lawes. By 1983, Beenie Man was recording with heavyweight DJs, such as Dillinger and Fathead and released his debut album, The Invincible Beenie Man: The Ten Year Old DJ Wonder and the single "Over the Sea". He was booed off stage at a show celebrating the visit of Nelson Mandela. In 1993 at the very popular show Sting he accused fellow deejay Bounty Killer that the elder artist had stolen his catchphrase, "people dead". This triggered a lyrical battle which continued on the air with each artist counteracting the other's songs. Finally, in 1995, Beenie Man and Bounty Killer settled their differences on the air by actually signing a peace treaty and the two recorded an album together, Guns Out. This was followed by a single, "No Mama No Cry", a rehash of the Bob Marley classic "No Woman No Cry", speaking out against violence and inspired by the murder of Pan Head, another popular Deejay. Partially as a result of prodding from his producers, Sly and Robbie, Beenie Man soon converted to the Rastafari movement. In 1994, he was signed by Island Records and released the critically acclaimed album Blessed. In 1995, Beenie Man released a remix of Barrington Levy's "Under Mi Sensi" in the United Kingdom, and collaborated with Dennis Brown and Triston Palma to release Three Against War and Lt. Stitchie on Mad Cobra Meets Lt. Stitchie & Beenie Man. He took another step up the ladder in 1996, releasing the seminal Maestro, produced by Patrick Roberts and shot him to UK fame. During the period from the mid to late '90s, Beenie Man dominated the Jamaican charts to the extent that he perhaps had a good claim to the crown of "Dancehall King", a title only bestowed previously on Yellowman in the early 1980s. In 1998, Beenie Man signed to Virgin Records to release albums in the United States. His first American offering was The Doctor (1998). In 2000, Beenie Man teamed up with Arturo Sandoval and Wyclef Jean (The Fugees) to release The Art & Life. During the late 1990s, Beenie Man began his conquest of America with the hits, "Romie", "Who Am I" and "Girls Dem Sugar", which featured American R&B singer, Mya. In 2002, he had a sizeable hit with a duet with Janet Jackson called "Feel It Boy", but his biggest break in America came in early 2004 with the release of a remix of "Dude", featuring guest vocals by fellow Jamaican Ms. Thing, as well as rhymes by Shawnna.

komposti sound

komposti sound
Komposti Sound, also known as Finland's Finest is by no doubt one of the most active and hard working sounds from Scandinavia. Established in 2001, the sound has won the Finnish Sound Clash Championship title three times, in 2004, 2005 and 2007 and defeated three big sounds Burndown Sound (JPN), Sovereign (UK) and Vertex (CAN/JAM) in Switzerland's Baddadan Clash 2009. Currently the crew, hailing from Helsinki, Finland, is busy running their weekly club Reggae Sundays which is considered by many to be one of the baddest regular dancehall reggae clubs in Europe with regular big sound system and artist guests from all over the world, as well as running their weekly radio show Kompostiradio and their monthly show Tropical Heat on German webradio byte.fm. They have promoted shows for and / or played alongside a lot of big sounds and artists from Mighty Crown, Stone Love, Supersonic, LP, Soul Stereo, David Rodigan, Civalizee and Sentinel to Buju Banton, Busy Signal, Baby Cham, Sizzla, Collie Buddz, Pressure, Bitty McLean, Konshens, Maximus Dan, Beres Hammond, Chuck Fenda and many many more. Their tours have taken them to a lot of different places including Japan, Sweden, Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Morocco, Russia and China.

What makes Komposti a crowd favorite in Finland and worldwide is Bommitommi, VG & Enrico's versatile and uplifting juggling style that ranges musically from late 60s rocksteady selections to the latest dancehall anthems. Komposti is also well known for tens of quality mix CDs and live audios, most of which are easily available for free download on the net.

As well as playing sound, Bommitommi is also known as a producer, engineer and a remixer, having produced numerous reggae albums for Finnish artists as well as putting out some notorious remixes on the somewhat shady Knut Posse label.

Queen Ifrica

Queen Ifrica
Queen Ifrica, royal empress, also known as Fyah Muma, took the music world by surprise, when in 1995 she turned on a scorcher of a performance in a talent contest at the aptly named Club Inferno in Montego Bay. The Queen beat all other contestants to win by a landslide. Her baptism in the business included a performance on Reggae Sumfest's Singer's Nite; coming onstage after a blazing set by Buju Banton, Queen Ifrica was not overawed by the occasion, but succeeded in commanding a good reception to her message. Queen Ifrica joined the Flames Production camp in 1998 when, at a show in honour of the late Garnett Silk, Tony Rebel hearing the clean vocals and the unmistakable quality of her performance, asked her to join the Flames camp. Since then, she has worked her way up to being one of the premier female cultural reggae artists in the business. Queen's stage craft, her repertoire, and her total artist development have bloomed over the years, ultimately making her into a staple in cultural reggae events around the world. Queen has had several of her recordings become a staple on the airwaves, from the ever popular "Randy" to "Boxers and Stockings". Queen Ifrica's music resonates with conscious, purifying energy. She remains grounded in her way of life, her community and her children. She has a strong social consciousness, supporting her words with actions by being an active participant in several community outreach activities. Included in this is her work on the Committee for Community in the heart of Kingston's inner-city, particularly the S-Corner community in Kingston 13. The United Nations' celebration of the Year of the Volunteers in 2001 saw her teaming with Tony Rebel and others to deliver a song recognized by the United Nations as a gem. With her haunting melodies, clear sound and fluid delivery, Queen Ifrica sets out to be a force to be reckoned with, creating timeless rebel music in the ilk of her father Derrick Morgan, Garnett Silk, Nina Simone and Miriam Mackeba. Her aspiration is to make music that lives on.

U-Roy

U-Roy
U-Roy (born Ewart Beckford September 21, 1942) is a Jamaican musician also known as The Originator and Hugh Roy. He was born in Jones Town, Jamaica. U-Roy's musical career began in 1961 when he began DJing at various sound systems, eventually working with King Tubby. Tubby was then experimenting with his equipment, in the process of inventing dub music. With U-Roy as his most prominent DJ, King Tubby's new sound became extraordinarily popular and U-Roy became a Jamaican celebrity. He recorded Dynamic Fashion Way, his first recording, in 1969 for Keith Hudson and then worked with almost every producer of the island: Lee Perry, Peter Tosh, Bunny Lee, Phil Pratt, Sonia Pottinger, Rupie Edwards, Alvin Ranglin and Lloyd Daley. In 1970, Jamaican singer John Holt became enamoured of U-Roy's technique. Working with Duke Reid, U-Roy's fame grew through a series of singles, including Wake the Town and "Wear You to the Ball". U-Roy's success continued throughout the 1970s, most famously with the album Dread in a Babylon with its iconic picture of him disappearing in a cloud of cannabis smoke while holding an enormous pipe, and a song called Chalice in the Palace, fantasising about smoking with Queen Elizabeth II in Buckingham Palace. He had become one of the island's biggest stars by the early 1980s, also garnering significant acclaim in the United Kingdom. His latest album is 2000's Serious Matter.

Tony Rebel

Tony Rebel
Tony Rebel is sited by many as the first rasta "singjay" in dancehall reggae music, a style which blends singing with traditional deejaying over dancehall riddims (other singjays include Pinchers, Anthony B, and many newer artists).

Tony Rebel's career began in the 1980's, and was often seen performing with Sugar Minott's Youthman Promotion sound system. Rebel is responsible for introducing a young Garnett Silk (then known as Bimbo or Little Bimbo) to the sound. The two were closely linked until Silk's untimely death in 1994.

Tony Rebel's career was at its peak in the early 1990's, with such hit records as "Fresh Vegetable", "Sweet Jamaica" and the duet with Garnett Silk "Christian Soldiers". He remained prominent in the late 90's with the smash hit "If Jah" on the La La Bella riddim. Tony Rebel still performs occasionally, but has focused most of his energy into the career of protege Queen Ifrica and his immensely popular, annual reggae festival in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica entitled Rebel Salute.

Beres Hammond

Beres Hammond
Beresford Hammond (b.1955 Kingston, Jamaica) has only really risen to become popular in the 'digital' age of Reggae, although his career stretches back to the 1970's. Considered by many to be one of Jamaica's finest contemporary vocalists, his best work has generally been captured on the 'Penthouse' and 'Xterminator' labels as well as his own 'Harmony House' imprint. The singer with his distictive 'Bourbon on the rocks' vocal style remains active today both recording and producing.

Junior Kelly

Junior Kelly
Tall, dreadlocked Junior Kelly is a devout Rastafarian on a serious musical mission which is manifested through the quality of his contemplative lyrics, the diversity of his substantial subject matter and his inspirational delivery. Born in Kingston 13, Junior was raised in nearby Spanish Town. Throughout his childhood, he was surrounded by music, his grandfather and father both played banjo, his mother sang in the Church and his oldest brother Jim was a popular Deejay with the Kilamanjaro Sound

There was a sense of comfort and security within the family; Despite their poor economic status they were rich in other ways. If it's soup today, we're happy, if it's crackers tomorrow, we're still happy, relates Junior, because we knew we had each other to lean on. The family was plummeted into depression with the murder of junior's oldest brother Jim. A part time caterer, Jim was the family's principal breadwinner and a role model for Junior ; Jim regularly practiced his lyrical toasts in the family living room, greatly influencing the career path of his youngest brother.

After Jim's death, to help support his family Junior followed soundsystems all over the island just for the opportunity to demonstrate his vocal and lyrical talents. He also began auditioning for several of the Producers comprising Kingston's crowded music circuit, attempting to record songs. Adhering to his principled Rastafarian lifestyle, he refused to compromise his lyrical content by writing lewd lyrics or songs disrespecting women.

Eek A Mouse

Eek A Mouse
Eek-a-Mouse (born Ripton Hylton November 19, 1957 in Kingston, Jamaica) is one of Jamaica's premier reggae stars. He is responsible for the creation of the reggae sub-genre singjaying. Although now 50 years old, he is still reputed to perform more than 200 shows in a year in America and the West Indies. Born in Kingston, Jamaica as Ripton Hylton, Eek-a-Mouse began his foray into reggae music when he was in college, but did not begin to garner a substantial audience until 1979 with his hit "Once a Virgin". This same year, he changed his singing name to "Eek-a-Mouse", the name of the racehorse he always bet on. In 1981, he cheered up the Reggae Sunsplash Festival, which was still mourning over the death of reggae icon Bob Marley. After this, his fame continued increasing through the year 1982 until 1988, when he released "Eek-A-Nomics", his last full-length CD until 1996. Eek-a-Mouse is a regular at the Jamaican music festival Reggae Sunsplash and often teams up with reggae duo Michigan and Smiley. He has also been featured on Christian rock group P.O.D.'s (Payable on Death) album Satellite, lending his vocals to the rock-reggae track "Ridiculous".

Sugar Minott

Sugar Minott
The Kingston, Jamaica born, Lincoln "Sugar" Barrington Minott is one of the great figures of Reggae music, and is fully justified to carry the status as the "Godfather of Dancehall". In the early 1970's Sugar Minott went to Studio One Recording Studios. By laying vocal tracks over the original tapes from the 60's, rather than using a live band, he caused a revolution in the sound that brought a new style to Reggae music--Dancehall. Sugar started his musical journey by entering talent contests in his youth. After he finished school he began selling records and formed his own sound system Black Roots, which was eventually to develop into the mighty Youthman Promotion. In 1969 Sugar became part of the African Brothers, dropping several successful singles that were an early example of the Rastafari movement's influence on the Jamaican music scene. Sugar has released a number of superb albums that he produced himself that established him as a bonafide worldwide Reggae star. These include "Ghetto-ology", "Bitter Sweet", "African Girl", "Music For Roots Lovers", "Sweeter Than Sugar", "Dancehall Showcase" and "Black Roots". Sugar continues to record and tour across the globe and he has released over 60 albums to date. Sugar Minott remains the true, original dancehall Reggae star and continues to be an inspiration and mentor to many up and coming artistes in Jamaica and across the world.
